On July 31st, I already explained here that <a href="https://www.outono.net/elentir/2026/07/31/historical-facts-for-the-uninformed-about-spain-and-the-cities-of-ceuta-and-melilla/"">Ceuta and Melilla have been part of Spain since long before Morocco existed. The Spanish citizens of both cities, who enjoy broad autonomy, have full equality of rights with Spaniards in the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands. I also pointed out that the UN does not consider Ceuta and Melilla to be colonies, for the reasons I have just explained.

Some people ignore all these arguments and cling to the mere fact that Ceuta and Melilla are in Africa, as is the country they border, and that for that reason alone they should already be handed over to Morocco. The logical question is: why apply this curious argument only to the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla?

As I explained last Friday, Spain is not the only country with territory spread across more than one continent. There are other countries in a similar situation. If the idea that some apply to Ceuta and Melilla were applied to the entire world, we would have the following:

Chile, an American country, should relinquish Easter Island, as it is part of Oceania.

Denmark, a European country, should relinquish Greenland, which is in North America. Greenland has belonged to Denmark since 1814 and, before that date, was part of the Kingdom of Norway from 1261, becoming part of the union of the kingdoms of Norway and Denmark in 1380.

Egypt, an African country, should relinquish the Sinai Peninsula, which is in Asia. The only Asian state that borders that peninsula is Israel, so the logical thing would be to hand that territory over to that country, which would then exercise joint control with Egypt over the Suez Canal.

Spain should relinquish one of its 17 autonomous communities, the Canary Islands, since they are also in Africa (they are located on the African continental shelf). It's worth remembering that these islands have been part of Spain since its founding, as they were already part of the Crown of Castile from the beginning of the 15th century. These islands have never belonged to any country other than Spain.

The United States, an American country, should relinquish one of its 50 states, Hawaii, which is part of Oceania. The United States annexed that archipelago in 1898 and made it a state in 1959. In addition, the United States should also relinquish other territories it possesses in Oceania: Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, Midway Islands, Baker, Howland, Jarvis, and Navassa Islands, Johnston and Palmyra Atolls, and Kingman Reef.

France, a European country, should relinquish its claims to French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Martin, which are in South America, despite being recognized as outermost regions of the European Union. It should also relinquish its claims to Réunion and Mayotte, two African islands that are also recognized as outermost regions of the EU. Furthermore, it should relinquish its claims to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, which is in North America; Saint Barthélemy, which is in the Antilles (part of the Americas); New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Clipperton Island, and Wallis and Futuna, which are in Oceania; and the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, located between Africa and Antarctica.

The Netherlands, a European country, should relinquish Aruba, Curacao, Saint Martin and the Dutch Caribbean, as they are in America.

Portugal, a European country, should relinquish its claim to the Madeira Islands, as they are located on the African continental plate, and to part of the Azores Islands, since part of them are on the North American continental plate and part on the African plate. It's worth remembering that the Madeira and Azores islands have belonged to Portugal since 1425 and 1427, respectively, and have never belonged to any other country.

Russia, a country whose capital is on the European continent, should relinquish 75% of its territory, as it is part of the Asian continent. This part includes Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Turkey, an Asian country, should relinquish the region of Eastern Thrace, which is in Europe. This part of the Turkish state originated from the invasion carried out by the Ottoman Empire against the city of Constantinople, then capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, in 1453. Turkey has its most populous city in that territory, Istanbul, which is the Turkish name for the ancient city of Constantinople.

One has to wonder if those proposing to seize Ceuta and Melilla from Spain will dare to propose all these changes, or if perhaps they intend for Spain to be the only country among those mentioned that has no right to have part of its territory on two continents. Let us bear in mind that there are only 14 kilometers between the Spanish peninsular coast and Africa.

Furthermore, have some people realized the consequences of claiming that people born in Africa have no right to be full Spanish citizens? Is there any reason why certain ideas that are considered openly xenophobic in Europe are simultaneously defended as natural in the case of Africa? One of the US presidents, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii in 1961, two years after the archipelago became a state of the Union. Does that make him less of a US citizen than other presidents?

---

Main image: HighInBC / NASA.

The migratory invasion of Morocco against the Spanish city of Ceuta has generated an avalanche of fallacies from various sources.

[19073,10398
27592,27574,19411,12743,1653,738,27585,27583,15557,27582,27586,27596,10902,10575,19548,27591,27595,23505,27565,5064,6256,22938,20527,27587,27580,27579,27563,27589,27569,1654,6482,27588,11326,27590,17197,27581,933,27568,10731,27593,27584,27594,11702,25204,11462,10830,10431,27597
post-66515","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-geography","category-spain","tag-american-samoa","tag-aruba","tag-azores-islands","tag-canary-islands","tag-ceuta","tag-chile","tag-clipperton-island","tag-curacao","tag-denmark","tag-dutch-caribbean","tag-easter-island","tag-eastern-thrace","tag-egypt","tag-france","tag-french-guiana","tag-french-polynesia","tag-french-southern-and-antarctic-lands","tag-greenland","tag-guadalupe","tag-guam","tag-hawaii","tag-howland-island","tag-istanbul","tag-jarvis-island","tag-johnston-atoll","tag-kingman-reef","tag-madeira","tag-martinique","tag-mayotte","tag-melilla","tag-midway","tag-navaza-island","tag-netherlands","tag-new-caledonia","tag-northern-mariana-islands","tag-palmyra-atoll","tag-portugal","tag-reunion","tag-russia","tag-saint-barthelemy","tag-saint-martin","tag-saint-peter-and-miquelon","tag-siberia","tag-sinai-peninsula","tag-spain","tag-turkey","tag-united-states","tag-wallis-and-futuna
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
