Este batall\u00f3n est\u00e1 dividido en dos unidades con distintos prop\u00f3sitos operativos: en primer lugar est\u00e1 el <strong>Subgrupo de Helic\u00f3pteros Medios<\/strong>, ubicado en la Base \"Jaime I\" de B\u00e9tera (Valencia) y que est\u00e1 equipado con <strong>tres helic\u00f3pteros AS-532AL Cougar<\/strong>. Adem\u00e1s, en la Base \"Coronel Mat\u00e9\" de Colmenar Viejo, en Madrid, est\u00e1 el <strong>Subgrupo de Helic\u00f3pteros Ligeros<\/strong>, equipado con <strong>cuatro helic\u00f3pteros EC-135 T2+<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There is another, less well-known military unit that also possesses firefighting capabilities: <strong>the Second Emergency Helicopter Battalion (BHELEME II)<\/strong>, whose radio call sign is \"Turia.\" This battalion is divided into two units with different operational purposes: first, the <strong>Medium Helicopter Subgroup<\/strong>, located at the \"Jaime I\" Base in B\u00e9tera (Valencia), equipped with <strong>three AS-532AL Cougar helicopters<\/strong>. Additionally, at the \"Coronel Mat\u00e9\" Base in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid, is the <strong>Light Helicopter Subgroup<\/strong>, equipped with <strong>four EC-135 T2+ helicopters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55481238890_93b052af17_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55481238890_ab5959a025_w.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ejercito.defensa.gob.es\/unidades\/Madrid\/famet\/Historial\/Ucos\/BII\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">The missions of BHELEME II<\/a> <strong>are to provide support and assistance to the civilian population in case of catastrophe and to support the work of the Intervention Battalions of the Military Emergency Unit (UME)<\/strong>, on which BHELEME II depends operationally, in addition to tasks of aid, rescue and firefighting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55480965248_14c339c822_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55480965248_70322840e6_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EjercitoTierra\/status\/2091065981120471152\" target=\"_blank\">These first three photos, which you can see here, were published today by the Spanish Army, showing the intervention of the Cougars from BHELEME II in the efforts to extinguish the forest fire in Pinofranqueado (C\u00e1ceres).<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/unidadmilitardeemergencias\/albums\/72177720335206475\/with\/55475444252\" target=\"_blank\">The following three photos were published by the UME<\/a> and correspond to the same intervention by this unit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55481025159_ca54e8e4c1_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55481025159_01c38ba2df_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ume.defensa.gob.es\/Noticias\/2010\/12\/Noticias\/2010_12_22cougar.html\" target=\"_blank\">BHELEME II received its first Cougar helicopter on December 22, 2010<\/a>. It flew from the Eurocopter factory in Albacete to the FAMET base in B\u00e9tera, piloted by the then battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Vicente Le\u00f3n Zafra. <a href=\"https:\/\/ume.defensa.gob.es\/Noticias\/2009\/08\/Noticias\/2009_08_01.html\" target=\"_blank\">The plan was to acquire 15 Cougar helicopters for the unit<\/a>, but budget cuts considerably reduced the final fleet. <a href=\"https:\/\/ume.defensa.gob.es\/Noticias\/2013\/03\/Noticias\/2013_03_21_entrega_cougar.html\" target=\"_blank\">The unit received its fourth Cougar on March 21, 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55480845926_00ae4fb8be_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55480845926_f3b8d0301c_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Initially, the helicopters retained the three-color camouflage of the other FAMET aircraft, but with a diagonal yellow stripe<\/strong> with two red lines painted on the tail to make them more visible and indicate their role as rescue aircraft. <strong>Finally, the helicopters were painted with several areas in a reflective orange color<\/strong> (on the upper and lower surfaces, the rear wheel fairings, and the lower tail fin).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55479853892_e58e5aef57_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55479853892_3ca2249f0f_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ume.defensa.gob.es\/Noticias\/2009\/08\/Noticias\/2009_08_01.html\" target=\"_blank\">BHELEME II reached its initial operational capability in August 2009 with three AS-332 Super Puma medium helicopters<\/a> deployed in B\u00e9tera, temporarily loaned by FAMET until the delivery of the Cougars, and the four EC-135s from Colmenar Viejo. <strong>The BHELEME II EC-135 fleet consists of the following units:<\/strong> HU.26-07 (ET-195), HU.26-10 (ET-196), HU.26-11 (ET-197) and HU.26-12 (ET-198).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3756\/9612627514_e127436ec7_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3756\/9612627514_4d1fc0280e_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The initial fleet of four Cougars of BHELEME II<\/strong> consisted of the following helicopters: HU.27-01 (ET-668), HU.27-02 (ET-669), HU.27-03 (ET-670), and HU.27-04 (ET-671). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.larazon.es\/espana\/un-helicoptero-de-la-ume-vuelca-durante-un-entrenamiento-DA10679684\/\" target=\"_blank\">HU.27-02 (ET-669) was destroyed during a training flight in Requena (Valencia) on September 10, 2015<\/a>, with its tail section breaking off. The helicopter was decommissioned, and the unit currently maintains three operational Cougars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3672\/9612604796_f86017c11d_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3672\/9612604796_5855fb0673_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The AS-532AL Cougar, also called the Cougar Mk-1, has a maximum speed of 222 km\/h<\/strong>, a range of 1,100 km, and a maximum takeoff weight of 9,000 kg. It carries a crew of three: pilot, co-pilot, and flight mechanic. Depending on the mission, the crew may also include a FLIR viewer operator, a rescue hoist operator, and two rescuers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7408\/9612631198_0855dd7bc3_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7408\/9612631198_6d858af1c1_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cougars of BHELEME II are equipped and certified to operate with helibuckets or \"Bambi Buckets\"<\/strong>, with a maximum capacity of 2,850 liters and a usable capacity of 2,100 liters. <strong>These accessories, which are hung from a ventral hook of the aircraft, allow the helicopters to collect water from reservoirs, rivers, and even swimming pools<\/strong>, facilitating firefighting efforts by providing water supplies at close range. <strong>BHELEME II has two types of \"Bambi Buckets\":<\/strong> the BBT 4453, with a capacity of 2,000 liters, and the BBT 6578, with a capacity of 2,500 liters. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/albums\/72157635267941656\/with\/9612625370\" target=\"_blank\">These last photos of the Cougars of BHELEME II were taken by me on August 27, 2013<\/a> during their intervention in a forest fire in Santa Mar\u00eda de Oya (Pontevedra).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54730934782_edef4a1818_c.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54730934782_edef4a1818_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The AS-532AL Cougar helicopters are equipped for their specific missions<\/strong>, such as a FLIR turret in the nose (allowing crews to see thermal signals in low-visibility conditions), a rescue hoist, and floats.
