Just as the Socialist Jos\u00e9 Luis Rodr\u00edguez Zapatero did, Pedro S\u00e1nchez is staking his political survival on sowing discord.<\/p>\n
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), currently led by Pedro S\u00e1nchez, has long been intent on fueling division among Spaniards: it has devoted enormous effort to reopening old wounds and leading us to believe that the Spanish Civil War was a conflict between the \"good\" and the \"bad,\"<\/strong> identifying the former with a faction that committed war crimes such as the Paracuellos massacre<\/a> (claiming the lives of some 5,000 men, women, and children due to their opinions or beliefs), unleashed a fierce anti-Catholic persecution<\/strong> (murdering 13 bishops, 4,184 priests, 2,365 male religious, and 283 female religious\u2014many of whom were also raped), and during which the Left, including the PSOE, organized detention and torture centers (the \"chekas\")<\/a> to which even women with babies were sent<\/a>.<\/p>\n It is certainly alarming for the head of a government that claims to be democratic to identify with all this, yet in Spain, it is nothing new. Let us recall that five years ago, S\u00e1nchez proposed acting like a socialist who threatened Spain with a \"civil war\" if the Right won the election<\/a>. He was referring to Francisco Largo Caballero<\/strong>, president of the PSOE between 1932 and 1935 and one of the most fanatical, extremist, and violent politicians in the history of Spanish socialism. <\/p>\n That affinity the Socialist leader holds for an anti-democrat like Largo Caballero may explain S\u00e1nchez\u2019s utter lack of scruples in striking a deal with<\/strong> those who to this day still fail to condemn the 853 murders committed by the terrorist group ETA<\/a> \u2014including those of 22 children and infants\u2014or the shameful incident witnessed by all Spaniards in 2021: the PSOE voting alongside the far-left against a European condemnation of the crimes of communism<\/a>, including mass murders, genocides, and deportations.<\/p>\n This week, the Socialist leader once again displayed his extremism in an interview\u2014which felt more like a softball session\u2014granted to the Televisi\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola (TVE) program Ma\u00f1aneros 360. S\u00e1nchez defended the \"Democratic Memory Law\"<\/a> (created to impose a leftist view of history on all Spaniards) by stating that \"it is a law that recovers and champions the best version of Spain\u2014that of the Second Republic<\/strong> \u2014which suffered a coup d'\u00e9tat at the hands of those whose descendants are now attempting to curtail citizens' rights.\"<\/em> With that last remark, S\u00e1nchez may well have been making a confession.<\/p>\n Currently, there are deputies in Congress from four parties that existed during the Second Republic:<\/strong> the PSOE, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), and the Basque Nationalist Party. Two of those parties \u2014including the PSOE\u2014spearheaded coups d'\u00e9tat against the Second Republic in October 1934.<\/strong> The PSOE did so in Asturias, and the ERC in Catalonia.<\/p>\n
