Russia continues its provocations against NATO, this time from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, northeast of Poland.<\/p>\n

At 1:34 PM CET today, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces issued a statement<\/a> reporting that on Wednesday at 11:09 AM CET, a violation of Polish airspace occurred involving a Russian Armed Forces Mi-8 helicopter<\/strong>. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces noted that the Russian Mi-8 originated from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and penetrated Polish airspace to a maximum depth of approximately 300 meters<\/strong>, remaining there for 42 seconds north of the town of Braniewo, near the southwestern corner of the aforementioned enclave.<\/p>\n

The statement from the Polish Operational Command added:<\/p>\n

\"The aircraft's flight path was monitored by Polish Armed Forces radar systems. The deployment of fighter jets was ordered, while ground-based forces and assets remained on alert.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the response capability of our air defense<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Mil Mi-8 is a multi-role helicopter. Although primarily used for troop and cargo transport, the Mi-8 also has armed versions and even variants for special operations\u2014such as the Mi-8 AMTSh Terminator<\/strong>\u2014used for commando infiltration.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that yesterday, Polish Defense Minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the interception of a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft by the Polish Air Force, 40 km off the Polish coast<\/a>. It should be recalled that sovereign airspace extends to 12 nautical miles (22.2 km) from the coast. \"These are not isolated incidents, but rather an element of constant pressure. Polish airspace is under constant surveillance<\/strong>,\"<\/em> the minister noted.<\/p>\n

The Ilyushin Il-20M, designated \"COOT-A\" by NATO, is a spy plane dedicated to gathering intelligence data for COMINT<\/strong> (communications intelligence) and ELINT<\/strong> (electronic intelligence) missions. It made its first flight on March 21, 1968, and is based on the Ilyushin Il-18 airliner.<\/p>\n

To these two incidents from the last few hours, another even more serious incident must be added: the discovery of a Russian attack drone on a Polish beach near Jaros\u0142awiec on Monday, September 14<\/a>, following a series of Russian air strikes against western regions of Ukraine. Poland's Ministry of National Defence indicated that it is likely a new jet-powered \"Gerber\" drone model<\/strong>, which Russia appears to be using to test the capabilities of its new design. At the time it was found, the Russian drone was carrying explosives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On September 3, the Polish Minister of Defence announced<\/a>: \"Following recent Russian provocations and acts of aggression, I have decided to expand the protection of our airspace.<\/strong> We are increasing the activity of our air forces, including F-16 aircraft and helicopters. Recent weeks have shown that provocations by Russia take various forms and pose a threat in places previously considered safe.<\/strong> Poland is constantly monitoring the situation on the eastern border. We are also strengthening systems for a rapid response to threats across Polish territory.\"<\/em><\/p>\n
