Designed by German engineer Hermann Pohlmann (1894\u20131991), <strong>it made its maiden flight on September 17, 1935<\/strong>. <strong>The Stuka carried a crew of two\u2014a pilot and a gunner<\/strong>\u2014with the latter also serving as the radio operator. <strong>The aircraft featured an all-metal fuselage and wings<\/strong> and could withstand dives of nearly 80 degrees, making it one of the best dive bombers of the war.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55572513527_e81536b180_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55572513527_5c5243d123_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Junkers Ju-87A of Sturzkampfgeschwader 165. Early versions of the Stuka were characterized by larger fairings on their front landing gear (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Sturzkampfflugzeug_Ju_87_A,_StG_165.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Ratrepane<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Stuka's wings featured a distinctive W-shape<\/strong> that allowed the main landing gear to be mounted at the lowest point\u2014thereby shortening it\u2014while the inner section provided clearance for a 250 kg bomb beneath the fuselage. <strong>As an attack aircraft, its armament configuration was primarily defensive<\/strong>, consisting of two 7.92 mm MG-17 machine guns in the wings and a twin 7.92 mm MG-81 machine gun at the rear of the cockpit, manned by the gunner. Mounted on the fairings of its front landing gear were two small propellers\u2014known as \"L\u00e4rmger\u00e4t\" (noise-generating devices) \u2014designed to produce <strong>a siren-like sound intended to sow panic among the enemy<\/strong>. These devices were popularly known as \"Jericho Trumpets.\"<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55573665604_56d4835f53_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55573665604_f9c937ff9b_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Junkers Ju-87B, the TD+AY, simultaneously dropping its 250 kg bomb and its four 50 kg bombs during a dive-bombing mission in 1940 (Photo: Imperial War Museum).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Stuka saw its first combat action during the Spanish Civil War<\/strong>, having been deployed with the Condor Legion (the unit of German volunteers fighting for the Nationalist side) in August 1936. <strong>Its use in Spain was strictly experimental and covert<\/strong>; indeed, all of the Condor Legion's Stukas were returned to Germany following the war's conclusion in April 1939. <strong>The German Luftwaffe employed the Stuka in September of that same year during the invasion of Poland<\/strong>, where it served as a cornerstone of the offensive strategy known as Blitzkrieg (lightning war).
