One of the mysteries that has occupied radio amateurs in many countries for years are the so-called numbers stations.
The first stations of this type began to be received during the First World War, but undoubtedly the most famous of them all is UVB-76, known as "The Buzzer," a Russian shortwave radio station broadcasting on the frequency of 4625 kHz, whose signals began to be received in the 1970s. Generally, this station emitted a buzzing sound, but sometimes numbers and words in Russian could be heard. Numbers stations are often associated with intelligence services and possible communications with spy networks.
Today, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has released a video of a numbers station captured on February 28, at the start of Operation Epic Fury, the joint US-Israeli attack against the Islamist dictatorship of Iran. This shortwave station broadcasts the voice of a man repeating numbers in Persian, and according to amateur radio operators, it appears to be transmitting from somewhere in Western Europe. The video shows a map stretching from northwestern Italy to the Netherlands:
"Radio enthusiasts believe it may be a numbers station, a type of spy radio station historically used to send encrypted coded messages to intelligence agents. These broadcasts were widely used by spies in the Cold War, allowing governments to communicate with operatives in secret", that media outlet points out. "RFE/RL captured this numbers station audio recording on March 10. Soon after, someone tried jamming the signal with electronic interference." Could this be a numbers station linked to the Iranian dictatorship, perhaps transmitting signals to agents in Europe?
