Fortaleza de Insua

Fortaleza de la Isla de Insua (Portugal), del siglo XVII, situada en el estuario del Río Miño, entre la costa de Caminha (Portugal) y de La Guardia (España). En el interior de la fortaleza está el convento franciscano de Santa María de Insua, construido en 1471. A finales del siglo XVI y a comienzos del XIX la isla fue temporalmente ocupada por España. En 1834 los últimos monjes franciscanos abandonaron el lugar. La fortaleza estuvo ocupada por un destacamento del Ejército portugués hasta bien entrado el siglo XX. En la actualidad el antiguo recinto militar está gestionado por el Instituto Politécnico de Viana de Castelo, aunque el fuerte lleva unos años prácticamente abandonado. En el lado occidental de la isla hay una baliza que aún funciona.

Fortress of Insua Island (Portugal), of the XVII century, located in the Minho River estuary, between the coast of Caminha (Portugal) and La Guardia (Spain). Inside the fort is the Franciscan convent of Saint Mary of Insua, built in 1471. In the late sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries the island was temporarily occupied by Spain. In 1834, the last Franciscan monks left the site. The fort was occupied by a detachment of Portuguese Army into the twentieth century. Today the former military area is managed by the Polytechnic Institute of Viana de Castelo, although the fort had been abandoned for years. On the western side of the island is a beacon that still works.
