This smiling girl was called Rosalia Elisabeth Bloemist, although she was usually called Lia. She was born on December 3, 1933, on this day, in Amsterdam.
Her parents had a jewelry store on the Schoolstraat, a street in the west of the Dutch capital. On February 11, 1944, when Lia was 10 years old, she was deported by the nazis to the German death camp at Auschwitz. She was selected there, as they did with children, and sent to a gas chamber as soon as she arrived. She was murdered for being Jewish. It is unknown what happened to her parents.
Never forget.
