Propaganda is causing a curious numbing effect among many Spaniards regarding their perception of our external threats.
On July 8, the Pew Research Center published the results of a survey that revealed some interesting data about Spain. According to the survey, 31% of Spaniards surveyed identified the United States as the greatest threat to Spain, making it the most frequently cited country with that rating. It should be noted that Spain is the only European country in NATO and the European Union where this occurs.
Significantly, in the Atlantic Alliance, only one other country perceives the US as the greatest threat: Canada. 59% of Canadians surveyed said so, something that may be attributed to Donald Trump's messages advocating the annexation of that country to the United States. For the Kremlin, this is a great success: in Spain, Russia is the second most frequently identified country as the greatest threat, with 26%, a percentage that drops to 11% in Canada, behind communist China, which obtains 17%.
The third country identified as the greatest threat by Spaniards is Morocco, with 18%, far behind the United States. This is truly ridiculous, since the United States is an ally of Spain, while Morocco is a country that covets territories that are part of Spain, such as the Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, and other Spanish strongholds in North Africa. Likewise, Communist China is perceived as the greatest threat by only 4% of Spaniards.
Spain's surreal results can be explained by the unhealthy hostility toward the US on the part of much of the left and far-left, but also on the part of much of the far-right and the Muslim population. Added to this are Trump's threats of tariffs, which have done nothing to improve the US's image in Spain. Between them, they have managed to make a democratic country and ally of Spain like the US be perceived as worse than a dictatorship like Russia, which has threatened to use nuclear weapons against NATO, of which Spain is a member.
Furthermore, of all the European countries surveyed, Poland is the one that most perceives Russia as a threat: 81% of respondents said so. Interestingly, Ukraine is the second most perceived country as a threat by Poles, but this is a very small percentage: 6%, which can be explained by the anti-Ukrainian propaganda of the Polish far right.
Russia is also perceived as the greatest threat in Sweden (77%), Germany (59%), the Netherlands (57%), France (50%), the United Kingdom (49%), Hungary (33%), and Italy (32%). Significantly, for US respondents, the greatest threat is communist China (42%), with Russia in second place at just 25%.
