It has been almost four decades since the premiere of "Predator" in 1987, and this long-running saga continues to produce new films.
This week sees the release of "Predator: Badlands," the first film in which a Yautja (the alien race so feared in other installments of the saga) plays the lead role, portrayed by New Zealand actor Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Alongside him is Elle Fanning, the girl from "Super 8" (2011), now 27 years old, who plays an android from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, omnipresent in the "Alien" saga.
I must confess I wasn't expecting much from this film directed by Dan Trachtenberg. His film "10 Cloverfield Lane" (2016) seemed interesting but didn't thrill me, just like "Prey" (2022), his first foray into this science fiction saga. However, "Predator: Badlands" has turned out to be better than I expected. I especially enjoyed the spectacular scenery and creatures in the film, as well as the part of the story related to Yautja culture. While not an exceptional film, it's entertaining and has some original aspects. I don't ask for much more from a film in the "Predator" saga...
I do want to mention that this is not a suitable film for young children. This should be obvious to anyone who has seen previous installments in this saga, but unfortunately, there are still parents who take young children to the cinema to see a film like this. Beyond the fact that it has some brutal scenes, a young child won't understand more than half of what's happening and will spend the entire film asking why this or why that, and worse, bothering the other viewers (unfortunately, I witnessed this today). Please think about it.
