Spain is experiencing an unprecedented explosion of corruption scandals and sexual harassment within the socialist ranks.
Not even when Felipe González was in power was there such a constant succession of scandals as we are seeing now, and that's saying something, considering that in those years political corruption reached unprecedented levels in Spain. We have a government completely overwhelmed by corruption cases. The most recent news, which broke this afternoon, was the arrest of the president and CEO of the airline Plus Ultra, just after it was revealed that the National Police was searching its headquarters for irregularities in the 53 million of the bailout granted by the Sánchez government in 2021.
It should be noted that Plus Ultra is a major company that has links to Venezuela and links to former socialist president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a controversial figure due to his connections to the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro. Maduro. This case is one of the biggest scandals for the Sánchez government. Let's remember that in April, the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard linked Sánchez's wife to that bailout, as an alleged mediator.
This case could possibly lead to the downfall of Zapatero and, with him, Sánchez himself. It would be devastating for Spanish socialism, since Zapatero acts as a shadow president of the PSOE, even though he formally holds no position in the Socialist Party. His influence on Sánchez explains the government's increasing alignment with the international far left on issues such as hostility towards the State of Israel, distancing itself from the United States, and the rapprochement with the communist dictatorship China, with which Zapatero also has important ties.
The question now is: Will Sánchez go from La Moncloa to Soto del Real? For those unfamiliar with Spain, La Moncloa is the palace that serves as the residence of the president of the government, and Soto del Real is the luxury prison where former Socialist minister José Luis Ábalos is already incarcerated. The net of justice is tightening around the government due to its corruption scandals, and with each passing day, the possibility of Sánchez becoming the first president of the government of Spain to end up in prison seems increasingly likely. The scandals are so serious and far-reaching, and the socialist leader has displayed such a lack of scruples, that the only question left is: What will he be capable of to avoid ending up behind bars?
