A multitude of Iranian citizens have been demonstrating against the Islamist dictatorship of Ali Khamenei for more than two weeks now.

Sánchez accepted human rights advice from the Iranian dictatorship that kills protesters
The Iranian dictatorship and what lies behind the complicit silence of many in the West

On January 2nd, I already denounced here the silence of many in the West regarding the protests in Iran. It is a particularly ominous silence from our politicians, people who supposedly believe in democratic values and human rights but who, with a few honorable exceptions, remain shamefully silent in the face of the protests of a people demanding freedom and, even worse, in the face of the regime's violence, which represses demonstrators with gunfire, killing hundreds of people.

One of the European countries suffering the effects of Iran's terrorist regime is Ukraine. The Iranian dictatorship has been selling suicide drones to Vladimir Putin's dictatorship—the infamous HESA Shahed 136 drones—which are being used by the Russians in their mass attacks against the civilian population of Ukraine. In September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the international sanctions against the Iranian regime.

Yesterday, at 9:37 PM CET, Zelensky posted two versions of the same message on Twitter: one in English and another in Persian. The message states the following:

"What is happening in Iran now – large-scale protests, effectively an uprising – is a clear sign that things won’t get easier for Russia.

And every decent person on this planet truly wants the people of Iran to finally free themselves from the current regime that has brought so much evil to Ukraine and to other countries.

It is crucial that the world does not miss this moment when changes are possible. Every leader, every country, and international organizations must step in now and help the people remove those guilty of what Iran has sadly become.

Everything can be different."

Zelensky's message on Iran deserves applause. Western leaders should endorse this message and speak with equal firmness about what is happening in Iran. The Islamist dictatorship in Tehran has long benefited from the silence of many in the West, if not from the complicity of some politicians, especially on the left. Defending freedom and democracy requires courage and clarity, which is precisely what the Ukrainian president has been demonstrating these past four years in the face of the criminal Russian invasion his country is suffering.
