Trump said he will annex that Danish territory 'the easy way' or 'the hard way'

The two favors Trump is doing for Moscow under the guise of protecting Greenland from Russia

Some people claim that Donald Trump is a brilliant negotiator and a great strategist, but the facts do not support those claims.

We are seeing this now with Trump's claims on Greenland, a territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. A few days ago, the US president claimed that he has to "seize" Greenland to prevent Russia and China from doing so. He also indicated that he will do it "the easy way" or "the hard way'".

It's hard to imagine the government of the leading Western power making such a display of arrogance and ineptitude against Denmark, a country that is a staunch ally of the United States. Let's remember that Denmark was one of the founding members of NATO in 1949. Even today, while Trump mocks his Danish allies and their commitment to defending Greenland, the U.S. State Department website states:

"Denmark is a strong NATO Ally and a reliable contributor to multinational stability operations, as well as to international assistance initiatives. Denmark has forces deployed worldwide to several NATO missions, UN peacekeeping operations, and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Denmark led NATO Mission Iraq from November 2020 until May 2022.

Denmark hosts Pituffik Space Force Base in Greenland, which hosts a U.S. military presence and provides great strategic value for U.S. and NATO military forces. Since the 1950s, Pittufik, formerly known as Thule Air Base until 2023, has enabled space superiority and provided a critical early-warning radar system that improves U.S. and NATO military capabilities in the Arctic region."

If it were true that Trump is interested in defending Greenland, there is no need for the United States to annex it, just as it hasn't annexed South Korea or Germany (two of the countries where the US has the largest military presence) or any of the other nations where it has been deploying troops. Let's remember that in June 2025 Denmark approved a military agreement with the US that offers several bases to that country, so the White House cannot claim a lack of cooperation from its Scandinavian ally.

Paradoxically, with his campaign to annex Greenland, Trump is doing two favors for the Kremlin while simultaneously claiming he wants to seize that Danish territory to protect it from Russia. First, with this claim, Trump has managed to shift the international focus away from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a country that has been heroically defending its territory for years, also enduring the recent obstacles put in its way by the current US president.

If Trump wants to curb Russian expansionism, he must focus his greatest attention on Ukraine, and also provide more military and economic aid to the Ukrainians. If Ukraine were to lose this war due to a lack of American support, Trump would have committed an unforgivable error that would grant Russia a major strategic victory on European soil, all while the US president is busy trying to annex the most sparsely populated territory in the world.

Secondly, this operation by Trump regarding Greenland threatens to break the most powerful alliance the United States has ever had: NATO. Seeing the president of the most powerful country in the Atlantic Alliance threatening a loyal ally is a shameful act that threatens to shatter the relationship of trust between Washington, D.C. and its allies. What willingness to cooperate can the U.S. expect from its allies while threatening to seize part of one of them "the easy way" or "the hard way"? Significantly, Trump displays more hostility toward an allied country than toward Russia, a rival power that the current American president has been treating with embarrassing docility.

The United States took decades to build the network of alliances it has in Europe today. It was an intelligent and painstaking strategy, based on mutual trust and a desire for cooperation. This important transatlantic link must be nurtured and expanded, because until now it has prevented the Alliance's member countries from being subjected to armed aggressions as serious as those that occurred in the first half of the 20th century. These aggressions have been repeated in Europe, precisely outside NATO's borders. Nothing could make Putin happier than to see Trump destroying this Alliance, which is what he could bring about with his desire to annex Greenland "the easy way" or "the hard way".
