Information about the tragic accident involving two derailed trains in Adamuz

This Sunday afternoon, two trains derailed in a terrible accident in the town of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, Spain.

+ UPDATED 31.1.2026 10:39h: A woman hospitalized as a result of the Adamuz accident died this Friday. With her death, the number of fatalities in this tragedy has risen to 46.

+ UPDATED 22.1.2026 16:46h: The two missing bodies from the Alvia train crash have been found, raising the death toll in Adamuz to 45. The number of hospitalized patients is 31, including 3 children. Of the 31 injured, 6 remain in intensive care.

+ UPDATED 21.1.2026 17:20h: The death toll in the Adamuz accident rises to 43. In addition, 37 people remain hospitalized, 4 of them without children.

+ UPDATED 20.1.2026 22:26h: The death toll in the Adamuz accident has now risen to 42. In the last few hours, five more bodies have been found in the wreckage of the Alvia train, and the possibility of more bodies being recovered is not ruled out, according to the newspaper El Mundo.

+ UPDATED 7:17 PM: El Mundo reports that the death toll from the Adamuz accident has risen to 40. In addition, there are 122 injured, 41 of whom remain hospitalized. Among those hospitalized are 5 minors, one of whom is in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

+ UPDATED 8:51 a.m.: At 8:26 a.m. CET, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has written from Córdoba: "The death toll has now reached 39 and is not final."

+ UPDATED 8:34 a.m.: EFE reports that 73 people remain hospitalized, 24 of them in serious condition, including 4 minors. Furthermore, this agency has reported that the last inspection of the Iryo train involved in the accident in Adamuz was carried out four days ago.

+ UPDATED 7:17 a.m.: The Efe news agency has just reported that there are now 39 dead in the Adamuz accident.

+ UPDATED 3:20h: According to Radio 5, the death toll in this accident has risen to 24, according to Emergency Services sources.

+ UPDATED 1:23 AM: Just a few minutes ago on Radio 5, the Chief of the Local Police of Adamuz stated that three units (the locomotive and two passenger cars) of the Alvia train have fallen down the embankment. The engine sustained the most damage. The Chief of Police added that more than a dozen people had been rescued from those cars. These are the passenger cars that Minister Óscar Puente referred to in his press conference (see next update).

+ UPDATED 0:54: In a press conference broadcast on TVE, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, stated that the worst damage in the accident was to the Renfe Alvia train, specifically its first two passenger cars. The first car was carrying 37 people and the second 16.

According to the latest information published by TVE, there are now 21 dead and 100 injured, 25 of them seriously. At approximately 11:00 PM CET, TVE reported that one of the deceased was the driver of the Renfe Alvia train involved in this accident. Rescue operations are ongoing. On TVE, the Andalusian Health Councilor, Antonio Sanz, stated that one of the trains collided with the other and that some of the carriages from one of the trains fell down a 4-meter embankment. Sanz has indicated that the situation suggests the death toll will continue to rise. The councilor indicated that there were some cars that had fallen into that embankment and that access was "extremely difficult".

ADIF has released this number to assist the families of the victims of the train accident: 900 101 020.

Iryo has released this number to request information and receive assistance related to the incident: 900 001 402.

An hour ago, ADIF stated: "High-speed rail service between Madrid and Córdoba, Seville, Málaga, and Huelva will be suspended, at least throughout Monday, January 19."

Renfe has stated the following in a press release: "At 7:45 p.m., Iryo train 6189, traveling from Málaga to Atocha, derailed in Adamuz, invaded the adjacent track, and caused the derailment of Alvia train 2384 Madrid-Huelva, which was traveling on that track."

According to ADIF, the two trains involved in this accident are:

• LD AV Iryo 6189 Málaga - Puerta de Atocha (Madrid). It was the first train to derail. It is an ETR 1000 from the private operator Iryo. According to this company, approximately 300 people were traveling on this train.
• LD AV 2384 Puerta de Atocha (Madrid) - Huelva. It's a Renfe high-speed Alvia train S-120. This train collided with the Iryo train.

This is one of the first videos of the accident shared on Twitter. It was recorded by @ibuprofeno600mg moments after the accident inside one of the passenger cars of the Iryo train. We can see some damage inside, but the passengers in this car appeared to be unharmed.

The following video was shared by another passenger on train number three in Iryo, @eleanorinthesky. We see the locomotive tilted 90 degrees and behind it one of the passenger cars leaning forward, with a passenger trying to climb out of a window:

The following photo has been published by various media outlets (I haven't been able to locate the source). On the left, we see the locomotive of the Iryo train, tilted 90º to the left. Behind it, we see the first passenger car. To the left, between the two, we see a fallen pole, apparently belonging to the catenary, the cable that supplies power to trains on electrified lines. The voltage on this line has dropped due to this accident, leaving trains traveling on the same track stopped. @MemoriasPez has published a thread on Twitter from one of the affected trains, which had to be towed back to Córdoba by a diesel locomotive.

UPDATED 2:00 AM: A photo of the Renfe Alvia train cars that fell down the embankment. It is being published by various media outlets; Huelva Información indicates that it is a photo by Lola Beltrán. The vehicles are wrecked. Most of the fatalities are likely related to this section of the Alvia train.
