Putinist methods of the socialist sewer: what kind of country have they turned Spain into?

In a democracy, public authorities have a duty to set an example for citizens through their conduct. In Spain, the opposite is true.

In 2024, Sánchez described the inconvenient media as a 'mudslinging machine'

Two years ago, when the journalistic investigation began that led to the legal proceedings against his wife for several crimes, Pedro Sánchez coined the expression "smear machine" to try to discredit the independent media outlets investigating the irregularities related to Begoña Gómez. Since then, the government, the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), and its propaganda machine have continued to escalate their attacks on media outlets and judges investigating this and other socialist scandals.

The Sánchez government has used the Council of Ministers press conferences to carry out these attacks, and not just once or twice, but repeatedly. After remaining silent for far too long, yesterday the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) issued a rather lukewarm statement criticizing these attacks, noting that "they contribute to eroding public trust in the rule of law" and denouncing that such actions "weaken the foundations of an advanced democratic society and call into question the very foundations of the rule of law by instrumentalizing judicial activity".

Furthermore, this Tuesday the newspaper El Debate revealed that the socialist "sewer" —as activists dedicated to waging dirty war against inconvenient journalists and judges are known— used fake photos generated with AI to discredit Judge Beatriz Biedma Rojano, who is presiding over the case of Sánchez's brother, after finding nothing else to attack her with following a spying operation targeting her, her family, and her associates. Will some still think it's an exaggeration to say that Spain is governed by a mafia?

Ayer, tres asociaciones de jueces y dos asociaciones de fiscales emitieron un comunicado denunciando esa guerra sucia: "causa una profunda inquietud la posibilidad de que las supuestas estrategias de deslegitimación hayan afectado no sólo a una compañera concreta sino a una pluralidad de integrantes de la judicatura". El comunicado añade:

Yesterday, three judges' associations and two prosecutors' associations issued a statement denouncing this smear campaign: "It is deeply concerning that the alleged delegitimization strategies may have affected not only one specific colleague but a plurality of members of the judiciary." The statement adds:

"In recent years, attacks from politicians against members of the judiciary have been frequent, based solely on disagreement with the content of the rulings issued. Judicial associations have repeatedly warned of the risk this poses to the erosion of the rule of law. However, what has been published these past few days goes much further, insofar as it suggests an orchestrated strategy to undermine judicial independence, and in this respect, the Declaration issued today by the Standing Committee of the CGPJ is insufficient."

Methods like those used by Putin's dictatorship

So, while the government was discrediting media outlets and judges who were doing their duty, the real "smear machine" was within the socialist ranks, dedicated to carrying out a campaign of pressure and defamation to bring this woman down. What kind of country have they turned Spain into? How is it possible that after all this came to light, no one has resigned yet? How can we live peacefully in a country whose government acts like a criminal gang? A gang that engages in such repugnant acts not only to get rid of a judge, but also to destroy judicial independence.

These underhanded methods are nothing new: Putin's dictatorship has frequently used them for years in its disinformation campaigns to discredit Ukraine, NATO member countries, and all those who oppose this tyrant and his cronies, both inside and outside Russia. For the terrorist regime in Moscow, anything goes as long as it serves its interests. It is a government without any moral scruples, a clear heir to a Soviet dictatorship whose modus operandi was exactly the same.

Frankly, it's chilling to think that in Spain we are governed by people like this, who are capable of instigating thugs who embrace mafia-like tactics to silence and intimidate those who bother them, and all this while the European Commission insists on maintaining a scandalous silence, simply because Ursula von der Leyen needs the support of the very same socialists who are doing these things in Spain. It is becoming increasingly clear that either the Spanish people throw these despicable politicians out of power, or we will end up having something similar here to what they are suffering now in Russia.
