In many countries there are very varied legends, even in those with a more recent history and in relatively modern places.
The United States is a relatively young country compared to the older, major European countries, but it has already accumulated many legends, especially in the area of the original thirteen colonies. In one of them, the current state of Pennsylvania, there is a curious legend related to the Curry Hollow tunnel, built in Dravosburg in 1920 under a railroad track. The tunnel is 14 meters wide and 130 meters long, according to the website pghbridges.com.
There is a legend that a man was murdered in this tunnel and since then, when it rains, blood falls from the tunnel vault. Like most legends, this one has a logical explanation: there is probably a rusty pipe above the tunnel vault and the rust is the reason why the water falls with a reddish colour. Here you can see the western access to the tunnel on Google Maps, in images taken in May 2012, before this tunnel was closed to vehicle traffic:
Another mystery at this site is very close to the tunnel: the so-called "Door to Nowhere." It is a large concrete door that is sealed, with no known clue as to what was behind it. At the bottom of the door there is an opening several centimeters wide, through which it is impossible to access.
On October 26, 2014, a Facebook page about abandoned places in western Pennsylvania posted a photo of this door, stating:
"We have no idea where it led to or what it was used for. Interestingly, there is a second door, just like the first, further up the hill and angled sideways. These doors into the hillside are on the property that once belonged to the General Motors/Fischer Body plant on Lebanon School Road. The plant has been closed and torn down within the past few years.
On multiple occasions we, and friends that were with us, heard a dog barking, from what sounded like, inside the door. On other occasions we heard nothing. There are no houses near enough that we should have heard a dog barking like we did."
The most puzzling thing about this door to nowhere is that, according to the Facebook page, after 2012 someone put a fence and no-entry signs around the door. What's the point of protecting a sealed door that leads nowhere like that? Below these lines you can see this "Door to Nowhere" on Google Maps. Looking to the left you'll see the Curry Hollow tunnel, which is right next to it:
This Saturday, Ruin Road posted an interesting video about the Curry Hollow Tunnel and the "Door to Nowhere", thanks to which I learned the history of these two curious constructions:
