The Russian invasion of Ukraine may have left behind an absurd chapter that has not occurred in other wars in Europe.
Biden has been cowed for months by Putin's threats
Yesterday, citing US officials as a source, The New York Times announced that Biden will finally authorize Ukraine to use American missiles against Russia. This measure comes unfortunately late. As regular readers of this blog will remember, it's been three months since I denounced this absurd veto, after a massive Russian attack against Ukraine with more than 100 missiles and 100 drones.
Displaying the pitiful weakness he has shown throughout his term in office, Biden has been cowed for months by Putin's threats, threats that the Russian dictator has been making against the West for whatever reason for more than two years. Let us remember that Putin has already made threats against the admission of Finland and Sweden into NATO, against sending tanks to Ukraine, and then also against sending fighter planes. None of these threats were carried out, but they served to buy Russia precious time.
Russia has been using foreign weapons against Ukraine
While Putin was threatening the West, Russia has been receiving military aid from Iran, China and North Korea, using weapons from these three countries in its criminal aggression against the Ukrainian people. In other words, Russia could use foreign weapons to attack Ukraine, but at the same time Ukraine did not have permission from its Western allies to attack the bases on Russian territory from which it was constantly under attack. What has happened so far is that a part of the West has tried to make Ukraine defend itself from this aggression with one hand tied behind its back, which is terribly unjust and has cost many lives of Ukrainian citizens.
Putinists are now talking about 'escalation' after remaining silent in the face of Russian attacks
Biden's change of heart is to be welcomed, if it is confirmed. Of course, the Putinists are already adopting a pacifist pose to criticize the lifting of this veto, lamenting an alleged "escalation" of the conflict. These are hypocritical complaints.
They have not regretted the "escalation" as Russia attacked civilian targets in Ukraine, launching its missiles, drones and artillery at residential buildings, hospitals, kindergartens, churches, schools and shopping malls. They have not raised their voices when Putin murdered Ukrainians, but they do when Ukraine is in a position to respond to these attacks, directing missiles at the launch zones of Russian attacks.
Putinists are annoyed that those attacked defend themselves
What the Putinists are doing is the same false pacifism that remains silent when attacks are made against the State of Israel, that looked the other way when Israeli civilians (men, women, children and babies) were massacred, and that only complains when Israel responds to the attacks. In fact, the enemies of Israel and those of Ukraine are almost the same, especially the extreme left and the extreme right. They are not bothered when terrorists attack and kill Ukrainians and Jews. They are only bothered when those attacked defend themselves.
WWII only ended when the war finally reached the aggressor's territory
We must remember that 80 years ago, the West had to face the aggression of another criminal tyrant. That tyrant invaded a large part of Europe because many Western countries believed that this bully would be content with invading Czechoslovakia in 1938. The war against Nazi Germany only ended when he finally reached the territory of the aggressor, when the Germans no longer had impunity to attack their neighbors and ended up losing their offensive capabilities.
If 80 years ago a false pacifism like that of the Putinists had been imposed, who are only bothered by the fact that the attacked can defend themselves against the aggressors, surely today the swastika would still be waving in Paris and Warsaw, because the Germans would not have had to spend resources defending their own territory from constant air attacks. Let us learn a little from history and keep in mind that the only thing the Putinists seek is to favor the aggressor by any means possible and to bring the West to its knees before the bully in Moscow.
