In 1956, NATO began developing an early warning system against a possible attack by the USSR and its satellite countries.
This system was called Allied Command Europe Highband (ACE High, Allied Command Europe Highband). At that time, there were no current communications satellites, so this early warning network worked using a UHF tropospheric scatter system, which emitted signals that could be picked up beyond the horizon. In August we saw one of the ACE High system centers in Greece, specifically on the island of Kefalonia. The ACE High system was deactivated in 1996, when it became obsolete.
Today, the Youtube channel Okos, which usually publishes very interesting content related to urban exploration, has published a video in which several Spanish explorers enter two abandoned NATO bases, about whose location they have not revealed any information. The second of them is a communications center of the ACE High network. As you will see, the explorers used personal protective equipment due to the serious risks that these sites pose to health, due to the presence of asbestos and fungi, in this case at a brutal level, as you can see in the video (the video is in Spanish, you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
You can see a couple of screenshots from this video here (of great quality, as usual on this channel). Here we see one of the underground tunnels of one of the bases. The facilities are enormous.
Below these lines, two of the satellite dishes of the Italian ACE High base visited by these explorers. As I told you in August, these dishes were used to communicate with other ACE High stations, creating a communications network that connected northern Norway with Cyprus and southern Turkey.
