Trump calls Zelensky a 'dictator' but not Putin

On Tuesday, Trump blamed the Ukrainians for Russia's invasion of his country for failing to make a deal with Putin - that is, for failing to give in to the invader. As if that infamy were not enough, yesterday, on his Truth Social network, Trump published a vile message calling the president of Ukraine a "dictator", a word that Trump has never used against Vladimir Putin, whose criminal dictatorship is responsible for that invasion.

It is shameful to see the US president behaving like a Russian ambassador, like a mere puppet of a mass criminal like Putin. Biden was a disastrous president and Trump seems determined to make him even worse with this shameful servility towards Moscow, treating with contempt a people who are heroically fighting for their freedom and independence against an invader. Trump's attitude would embarrass conservatives like Ronald Reagan.

A woman who took up arms to defend Kyiv responds to Trump

The best response to Trump has come from a Ukrainian woman. Lesia Vasylenko is an opposition MP in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, and a member of Ukraine's permanent delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. She is a member of the Holos party, a party that is part of the Liberal International and has 20 seats in the Verkhovna Rada. In 2022, like other Ukrainian women, Vasylenko took up arms to defend the city of kyiv from the Russian invasion.

Yesterday, speaking to British media outlet Channel 4, when asked whether President Zelensky speaks for the country, Vasylenko replied: "Absolutely. When it comes to the analysis of foreign policies, Ukraine has always had one voice. I am an opposition MP, as you very well know, and still we are all speaking in one voice, saying that what the America today proposes for Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable.”

Regarding martial law, which legally prevents elections from being held in Ukraine, the MP also said: "We are living in martial law because actually Russia has attacked Ukraine in 2014 and then escalated that aggression into a full-scale war, so we in Ukraine have no choice but to live in martial law to protect ourselves."
