The author of this hoax, 'Herqles', said in 2023 that “Russia must not be defeated”

An example of the hoaxes that some people use to reduce support for the Ukrainian cause

There is a wise saying that lies have very short legs. We often see this on social media.

Demonstrations in support of Ukraine in Spain on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion
Patriotism and the Russian invasion: Do you ask of Ukraine what you would not accept for your country?

This afternoon, the Twitter account @herqles_es, with 142,000 followers, posted this message (here is an automatic copy):

I translate the text:

"Spanish liberals call for a demonstration in Puerta del Sol against Trump's peace agreement and in favour of continuing deaths in the Ukraine war.

Spain has gone from asking for the return of Spanish troops from Afghanistan in 2008 to demanding that young Spaniards be sent to die at the other end of Europe in 2025.

The poster, spread by personalities such as Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo (PP), shows the image of a missile crossing the Ukrainian sky, which has so far been described by many as a "bellicose nonsense".

What we see here is a blatant example of disinformation. Specifically, the message contains the following falsehoods:

  • It is false that this march was called by "Spanish liberals." The demonstration in question is part of the mobilizations organized in Spain on the occasion of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, demonstrations that have been called by organizations of Ukrainians residing in Spain. Specifically, this march from Madrid was announced by the association Con Ucrania, which is based in Madrid, last Sunday, February 16.
  • It is false that the march is called "against Trump's peace agreement", since that agreement has not even been signed. As can be seen in the Con Ucrania announcement, there is no reference to Trump or to the peace agreement that has not yet been signed.
  • It is false and purely mean to say that this march is "in favor of continued deaths in the war in Ukraine". Again, just go to the Con Ucrania ad, which states the following: "A key date is approaching that changed the life of not only every Ukrainian, but also the entire world. The number three is symbolic: so many days had Russia planned to take Kyiv and, with it, power in Ukraine. But Ukraine continues to defend itself. February 24 marks the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion, and that is why we invite you to join the demonstration on February 22 (Saturday) in Madrid. Let's keep talking about Ukraine, which continues to defend itself, so that the world does not forget." Thus, "Herqles" has invented this accusation to discredit the organizers.
  • It is false that Spain asked for the return of Spanish troops from Afghanistan in 2008. Spain did not ask for that: it was asked for by a minority of the extreme left, in mobilizations organized in March 2008, among others, by the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). The PCE does not represent Spain. At the time of that mobilization, the PCE only had one deputy in Congress.
  • It is false that anyone has demanded that young Spaniards be sent to die at the other end of Europe. There is no Spanish political party that supports sending Spanish troops to Ukraine. Nor have Ukrainian associations asked for it. Once again, it is an invention of "Herqles".
  • The missile flying over Ukraine is an example of what Ukrainians suffer on a daily basis at the hands of Russia, which has been launching missiles, drones and artillery shells against Ukrainian residential areas for three years. The "warlike nonsense" is Putin's, but "Herqles" does not denounce it.

It is worth noting that on April 8, 2023, "Herqles" stated:

"The fact that George Soros, Bill Gates and the rest of the globalist philanthropists' club are so afraid of Russia's victory over Ukraine is something that incentivizes many sovereignist citizens in the world to support Russia or at least to remain neutral."

On June 11, 2023, on his Telegram channel, "Herqles" posted:

"Russia may or may not have a terrible government, we are not going to go into that now, but globalism is using Ukraine to disarm Russia, either through military defeat or internal insurrection, and that is why all anti-globalists, independent of Putin, know that Russia must not be defeated."

This is the pro-Russian rubbish that many who spread the lies posted on this account are unwittingly helping to promote. If he posted all these falsehoods in one tweet, how many more does he post every day? How credible can someone who lies like this have?
