Yesterday, after a meeting lasting more than two hours at the PSOE national headquarters, the socialist "plumber" Leire Díez requested her voluntary resignation from the party. A very timely departure, since this way the Socialist Party avoids having to investigate Díez's shady dealings in an attempt to settle judicial investigations related to the PSOE's corruption scandals. This way, the party will not be able to expel her, so her departure remains an amicable matter.

The alternative was much worse: creating another loose end with a person who knows too much and who, when the time comes, could repeat what happened with former minister Ábalos, who ended up leaking uncomfortable information to the media. That's the biggest problem the PSOE has now: many people have been implicated in its scandals and the possibility of blaming certain people for those deaths is becoming increasingly smaller, because these people know too much and treating them badly could mean torment for the party after a while.

Yesterday's events are already very revealing. Last week, the official PSOE thesis was that Leire Díez acted on her own and was not working for the party. If this were true, she would have been expelled by now, if only for making infamous promises in exchange for political favors that give an image of the PSOE very similar to a mafia. Instead, there was a meeting lasting more than two hours at the PSOE's national headquarters, and everything was settled with a friendly march. One might wonder: In exchange for what will Díez remain silent?

I couldn't help but draw an ugly conclusion watching yesterday's farce, especially considering that we're talking about the same party whose leaders made an even worse farce in 1998, when Felipe González and the PSOE leadership accompanied former Interior Minister José Barrionuevo and former Secretary of State for Security Rafael Vera to the prison door after they were convicted for their role in the GAL case, a state terrorism scandal. That, more than a gesture of solidarity, seemed like a way to ensure that neither of them would "sing" before ending up behind bars.

In the end, the history of the PSOE is like an eternal return to the same swamp. It is the history of a party with an innate tendency toward political corruption, derived from its ideological defense of an elephantine state in which the Socialists have people plugged into all kinds of institutions, turning socialism into a metastasis for democracy. Meanwhile, while that circus was taking place yesterday on Ferraz Street, Pedro Sánchez still failed to appear before the media or Congress, as part of that Socialist strategy to create a firewall around the Prime Minister to protect him from the effects of that dirty war scandal against the UCO of the Civil Guard, as if Sánchez didn't know what was going on in his own party.

It's all so ridiculous and so surreal that it should provoke laughter, if it weren't for the fact that they are destroying our democracy.

+ UPDATED 13:52h: the circus continues, now with a surreal press conference by Leire Díez in a hotel (who paid for this?), in which Víctor de Aldama, commissioner of the Koldo Case plot, has burst in and stated: "this "The lady is lying." "It's all a lie. A lady who says she's here to do an investigation and threatens a lieutenant colonel of the Civil Guard and a civilian like me, is she doing an investigation? You're journalists. I don't think you're going to threaten and say that someone has to be killed or that Aldama has to be silenced no matter what," according to VozPópuli. This whole circus only makes the PSOE's scandals bigger.
