Russia launched one of the largest attacks on Ukraine's capital since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 tonight.
A massive attack with 11 missiles and 539 drones
Once again, the Russian attack has targeted civilian targets indiscriminately: "The attack damaged apartment buildings, businesses, a school, a medical facility, railway lines, and other civilian infrastructure in multiple districts. Fires blazed across the city, making the air dangerous to breathe", the Kyiv Independent reported.
This attack lasted almost all night and targeted the city of Kyiv, forcing its population to hide in the subway and bomb shelters. This morning at 9:02 CET, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that Russia launched 11 missiles and 539 drones in this attack. Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down 478 targets, specifically 2 Iskander-K cruise missiles and 268 drones, most of them of the Iranian-made Shahed type.
A total of 208 drones were shot down using electronic warfare measures. In addition, Ukrainian forces have begun using interceptor drones to shoot down Russian attack drones, scoring dozens of hits. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has warned allied countries: "Ukraine needs more air defense! It is crucial to protect our people from russian terror."
One person killed and 26 injured in Kyiv
Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the Ukrainian air defenses, there have been casualties. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported at 1:16 p.m. CET that a body was found under the rubble of a building destroyed by the attack and 26 people were injured in Kyiv, including a child.
Once again, Trump avoids announcing pressure measures against Russia
This new attack comes after Donald Trump's recent order to stop US aid to Ukraine, an order after which Putin has intensified his attacks against civilian targets. In statements made today, Trump has again responded evasively, attributing the war to his predecessor in office, Joe Biden, and avoiding announcing pressure measures against Russia, a policy of weakness that is only serving to make Putin feel stronger.
Conversation between Zelensky and Trump after the attack
However, Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Trump this afternoon. The Ukrainian president said: "I congratulated President Trump and the entire American people on the US Independence Day. We - in Ukraine - are grateful for all the support provided. It helps us protect lives, safeguard our freedom and independence. We have achieved a lot together with America and we support all efforts to stop the killings and restore just, lasting, and dignified peace. A noble agreement for peace is needed."
Zelensky added: "Today we discussed the current situation, including Russian airstrikes and the broader frontline developments. President Trump is very well informed, and I thank him for his attention to Ukraine. We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies. We have also agreed to a meeting between our teams. We had a detailed conversation about defense industry capabilities and joint production. We are ready for direct projects with the United States and believe this is critically important for security, especially when it comes to drones and related technologies."
