The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a world-famous aircraft with a large number of admirers.
This attack aircraft, known by its nickname "Warthog" and operated solely by the United States Air Force (USAF), made its first flight on May 10, 1972. Today, 219 A-10s of the 715 manufactured remain in service. This aircraft is still considered by many to be an irreplaceable tool in US military operations, as it has been proving for decades to be one of the best close support aircraft in history.
The key to the A-10's power is that, unlike other models, this aircraft was designed around its 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon, a lethal weapon against all types of armored vehicles and fortified positions. Its ammunition combines five PGU-14 API armor-piercing rounds filled with depleted uranium and one PGU-13 HEI high-explosive incendiary round, which are fired at a speed greater than the speed of sound. If you are targeted by an A-10, the shots reach you before you can hear them.
This aircraft's arsenal is complete with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, conventional and guided bombs, and rockets, which can be carried on a total of eleven racks, eight located under the wings and three in the ventral area of the fuselage.
