A communist suggesting Christians ally with the Iranian dictatorship: I'm not kidding

The far left is beginning to resemble a parody of itself, absorbed in increasingly colossal ideological absurdities.

In 2023, I warned here that a communist submarine was trying to infiltrate the Spanish right wing. I was referring to Vanguardia Española (Spanish Vanguard), an extreme left-wing organization that appeals to patriotism and Hispanicity to ensnare the unwary while praising Stalin and supporting the dictatorships of North Korea and Cuba, among others. In 2024 I reiterated that warning, given how easily some people normalize a small group that glorifies a dictator who committed crimes of genocide, using "Hispanism" and "anti-globalism" as disguises.

The popular protests in Iran against the Islamist dictatorship are making that Stalinist far left very active. After all, the Iranian dictatorship is an ally of Putin's dictatorship and the Chinese communist dictatorship, and those Stalinists who use patriotism as a lure are primarily concerned with the geopolitical interests of Moscow and Beijing. I leave the reasons to the reader's imagination.

These days we're seeing another example of this. Last Saturday, Santiago Armesilla, leader of Vanguardia Española, responded to a comment by Marcial Cuquerella about the protests in Iran. I couldn't help but laugh when I read his response:

"Iran is Shia, not Sunni. It is within Sunni Islam that jihadist Islamic fundamentalism originates. Iran could be an ally of the Christian world against Wahhabism. But the Christians, once again, have chosen the wrong enemy. It is not Iran."

A year ago, the Christian NGO Open Doors published its annual report on the persecution of Christians. The report indicated that Iran is among the ten countries where Christians suffer the greatest persecution. Specifically, this Islamist dictatorship ranks ninth on the list. Regarding this dictatorship, Open Doors states:

"Unrecognised converts from Islam to Christianity face severe religious freedom violations, primarily from the government and, to a lesser extent, from society and their families. The government views these converts as a threat, believing they are influenced by Western countries to undermine Islam and the regime. Both leaders and ordinary members of Christian groups are often arrested, prosecuted and given long prison sentences for ‘crimes against national security’. Recognised historical communities such as Armenian and Assyrian Christians are state-protected but treated as second-class citizens. They face many discriminatory legal provisions and are not allowed to worship in Persian or interact with Christian converts. Those who support converts can also face imprisonment."

It just so happens that the first country on that list of persecution is North Korea: it is the regime that treats Christians the worst in the world. Let's remember that in 2023, Vanguardia Española defined North Korea as "an example of resistance, sovereignty, insubordination, and singular patriotism." I wonder if Armesilla will also propose that we Christians ally ourselves with that criminal regime.

Yesterday, the leader of Vanguardia Española made it clear in a message what his priority is regarding Iran, and apparently it's not freedom of expression, women's rights, religious freedom, or other human rights: "The attack on Iran, broadly speaking, is also and above all an indirect attack on China. It's the sausage strategy (...) That's what's been done with Venezuela, what they want to do with Iran, and what will be done with Cuba and the European Union (through Greenland). The ultimate target is Russia and, in the end, China."

Thus, the freedoms of the Persians do not matter: what matters is defending the interests of Moscow and Beijing (a communist dictatorship that is also among the countries that most persecute Christians, according to the aforementioned Open Doors report). Ultimately, that communist leader has been supporting the Kremlin's position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an aggression that led to a war that, according to Armesilla, was started by the United States. That's the thing about ideological extremism: those who suffer from it end up completely detached from the real world and living in their own personal Matrix.

Of course, a communist spouting nonsense is nothing new. That's part of the tradition of that totalitarian movement, which has been resorting to lies countless times to justify itself and cover up its horrendous crimes for many years now. What's new is that there are people who claim to love freedom and right-wingers cozying up to totalitarians like that one, under the pretext of defending patriotism and Hispanic culture. For now, what these people have achieved is that messages like the ones mentioned get thousands of "likes" on Twitter. That's a huge favor to the Islamist dictatorship in Iran.
