Leo XIV's message to the Spanish people: “May God always bless Spain!”
This week, Pope Leo XIV made an apostolic visit to Spain, from which he returned to Rome visibly pleased.
The Pope received a warm welcome in Spain, a country that for centuries has been characterized by its deep Catholic roots. This Friday afternoon, before returning to Rome, Leo XIV published an initial message of thanks to Spain:
"I give thanks to God and to all those who have welcomed me and who, in a thousand ways, have collaborated in the preparation and realization of the various events in Madrid, Barcelona, Montserrat, and the Canary Islands. I return to Rome moved by the great affection with which I have been received, and comforted by the testimonies of faith and love for the Church, expressions of the great Catholic heart of Spain."
This Sunday, Leo XIV published a second message on Twitter, addressing the Spanish people and mentioning His Majesty the King and the bishops, once again expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome he received:
"I express my gratitude to the Lord for the #ApostolicJourney He has allowed me to undertake in Spain. I thank the Spanish people, who have welcomed me with great enthusiasm and devotion; and, in a special way, His Majesty the King. My heartfelt thanks also go to the bishops, the communities I have visited, and the entire Church in Spain. May God always bless Spain!"
Significantly, Leo XIV does not mention the government or its president in this message, something I find very significant, considering that Pedro Sánchez tried to use this visit as a distraction from the corruption scandals affecting his family, his government, and his party. The distraction operation not only went wrong, but also the Pope recalled in his speech to Congress issues such as abortion and euthanasia, indicating a position of the Church in defense of human dignity that clashes with the inhumanity of the laws promoted by the socialists.
