He signed the agreement on that colony behind the backs of Congress and Senate

Gibraltar, yet another example of Sánchez confusing Spain with his private estate

The Spanish Constitution states in its Article 1.2: "National sovereignty resides in the Spanish people, from whom all powers of the State emanate."

Likewise, the Constitution states in its Article 66.1: "The Cortes Generales represent the Spanish people and are made up of the Congress of Deputies and the Senate".

I think it's necessary to remember these basic things considering what we're seeing. On Wednesday, Pedro Sánchez attended the demolition of the Gibraltar fence after the approval of an agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on that British colony, which was officially signed in Brussels this Wednesday July 14.

That agreement establishes the free movement of people between the Campo de Gibraltar and Gibraltar and eliminates the need for a passport to travel to or from the British territory. Significantly, the British government has touted the outcome of this agreement, stating that it "delivers economic and trade certainty for people and businesses in Gibraltar, while safeguarding British sovereignty and protecting UK military operations," and has further emphasized that the agreement has "the full backing of Chief Minister of Gibraltar, and his Government, and the Gibraltar Parliament backed unanimously."

This last point is especially outrageous, considering that this agreement was approved by the Sánchez government behind the backs of Congress and the Senate, without any debate in either chamber, depriving the seats of national sovereignty of the opportunity to discuss a matter that seriously affects Spain's territorial integrity. Furthermore, Sánchez is doing this after his party, the PSOE, lost the last general election, in which the Popular Party won by a simple majority. This should serve as a lesson to the future government of what to do when the PSOE requests consultation on any matter once it returns to the opposition.

Furthermore, Sánchez has done with Gibraltar the same thing he did in 2022 with Western Sahara: yield to the interests of another country and alter the position that previous Spanish governments of different political persuasions have maintained for decades without any parliamentary debate. Sánchez is mocking national sovereignty, that is, the sovereignty of the Spanish people, by making serious decisions behind their backs, as if Spain were the private estate of the Prime Minister and he could decide to do whatever he pleases with the future of our country. It is the same Sánchez who talks a big game about international law, but always making major exceptions so as not to upset his Moroccan, Turkish, and Chinese friends, and who at the same time has no qualms about flouting national law, starting with the Constitution itself.
