During World War II, both sides captured enemy fighters and decorated them with their respective insignia.
An example of this is this German Messerschmitt Bf-109G fighter captured and painted with British roundels, in a test flight carried out by the Royal Air Force (RAF). It appears in a film from the Imperial War Museum in the United Kingdom:
