The successful Ukrainian attack on Russian bases has angered the Russian dictator

Putin's cynical tantrum exploits the double standards of politicians like Pedro Sánchez

Last weekend's bold Ukrainian counterattack is a major military success that has sent the Russian dictator into a tantrum.

Sánchez's double standard: He calls Israel 'genocidal' but not Hamas, Russia, or China

Accusing Ukraine of 'terrorism' for defending itself against Russian terrorism

Yesterday, with his characteristic cynicism, Vladimir Putin called Ukraine "terrorism" and engaged in what in psychology is called "projection," which is accusing others of one's own shortcomings, claiming that the Ukrainian government is "degenerating into a terrorist organization and its sponsors are becoming accomplices of terrorists." Recall that Putin started this war with an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and now he complains that those under attack are taking the war to the aggressor country.

In strictly objective terms, it is Russia that has been practicing a strategy of terrorism in this war, with systematic attacks against civilian targets (residential buildings, schools, hospitals, churches, kindergartens, universities, etc.), with massacres against defenseless civilians such as those in Bucha and Izyum, with torture and murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war and with the kidnapping of thousands of Ukrainian children, atrocities for which both Putin and his government deserve to be accused not only of terrorism, but also of crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of genocide.

The scale of Putin's terror strategy against Ukraine

The degree of Putin's cynicism is even more evident when we consider that in 2025 alone, Russia launched 27,700 aerial bombs, almost 11,200 Iranian Shahed drones, some 9,000 other types of drones, and more than 700 missiles against Ukraine, according to data published yesterday by the President of Ukraine. This armament is being concentrated in Russia's strategy of terror against civilian targets in Ukraine.

So far, Russia has been officially accused of terrorism by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, NATO, the European Parliament and the parliaments of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic. Let us also remember that Russia is supported by dictatorships that sponsor terrorism, such as Iran and North Korea, criminal regimes that have supplied the Kremlin with weapons to continue murdering Ukrainian civilians.

Sánchez has not accused Putin of 'terrorism' even once

Of course, Putin is perverse, but not stupid. His cynical accusation yesterday takes advantage of the double standards of some Western leaders when it comes to properly characterizing Russia's crimes against the Ukrainian people. We have one such leader in Spain, to the shame of millions of Spaniards. In these three years of Russian invasion, the socialist Pedro Sánchez has not accused Russia of "terrorism" or "genocide" even once, but he has falsely accused Israel of "genocide" for its counterattack against Hamas terrorists, the perpetrators on October 7, 2023, of the greatest massacre suffered by the Jewish people since the Holocaust. An anti-Semitic massacre with clearly genocidal aims but which Sánchez has not described as "genocide" either.

Three years after the start of this large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the double standards of unscrupulous politicians like Sánchez are what fuel Putin's cynicism, in addition to continuing to buy gas and oil from Russia, thus helping the Russian dictator finance his aggression against Ukraine, while the Spanish government decrees arms embargoes against Israel that harm Spain's own security, while buying weapons from countries like Türkiye, whose government is an ally of Hamas terrorists.
