Today, the United States celebrates Independence Day, a day that typically begins with fireworks displays across the country.
This July 4th, pro-life citizens in the United States will have two things to celebrate. In addition to the 249th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, yesterday the House of Representatives approved a legislative initiative to defund Planned Parenthood, the world's largest abortion lobby. The measure was approved by 218 votes in favor, all from the Republican Party, and 214 votes against, from the Democratic Party and Republicans Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
The pro-life website LifeNews has noted: "Once President Trump signs the bill into law it will be the first time that the radical Planned Parenthood abortion business has been defunded." LifeNews adds:
"The new law will redirect hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars to community-based, pro-life healthcare providers and away from Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion.
The bill, known as H.R. 1, marks a significant step in the pro-life movement’s long-standing effort to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood, a radical organization that kills over 400,000 babies in abortions annually while receiving more than $700 million in government funds."
The Catholic News Agency reported the precise figures in May: "Released on Mother’s Day, Planned Parenthood’s 2023-2024 annual report, titled “A Force for Hope,” revealed that the organization provided 402,230 abortions over the year, an increase of nearly 10,000 abortions from the previous year’s report and a record high in the abortion giant’s history." Figures that reveal the colossal dimensions of the macabre abortion business in the United States, a business fueled by federal funds... until now. The agency added:
"As abortions increased, taxpayer funding increased as well. Public funding for Planned Parenthood was up by about $100 million from the previous year’s report. At $792.2 million, taxpayer dollars made up nearly 40% of Planned Parenthood’s revenue."
After learning the result of the vote in the House of Representatives, pro-life leader Lila Rose, of Live Action, affirmed: "This is a WIN and human lives will be saved because of it! Next up: permanently defund and shut down the abortion industry and protect every child’s life!" A victory for the cause of life that I salute and celebrate from Spain. I hope that one day the rest of the world can free itself from this scourge that is leading to a massacre of 73 million of unborn children each year, according to WHO figures.
