The attack injured 30 people, including 3 children

This Saturday, Russia attacked two passenger trains at Shostka station in the Sumy region, two trains operated by Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state transport administration. This morning at 11:40 CET, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "All emergency services are already on the scene and have begun helping people. All information about the injured is being established. So far, we know of at least 30 victims. Preliminary reports indicate that both Ukrzaliznytsia staff and passengers were at the site of the strike."

At 12:24 CET, Ukrzaliznytsia released a statement stating: "Two trains were hit: the Tereshchenska–Novgorod-Siverskyi suburban train and the Shostka–Kyiv suburban train. The second attack on the electric locomotive occurred while the evacuation was already underway. A vile attack aimed at cutting off communication with our communities on the front lines. Our injured employee (a suburban train cashier) and injured passengers (including three children) are receiving medical care in hospitals."

Russia launched a second attack to kill rescuers

The Russian invading forces have been using this criminal double-barreled strategy for several years. This strategy consists of launching projectiles at a civilian target, waiting a few minutes for emergency services to arrive, and then also attacking first responders while they are helping victims, in order to increase the damage caused by the attack. It is a tactic that clearly constitutes a war crime.

Ukrainian President has denounced: "The Russians could not have been unaware that they were striking civilians. And this is terror the world must not ignore. Every day Russia takes people’s lives. And only strength can make them stop. We’ve heard resolute statements from Europe and America – and it’s high time to turn them all into reality, together with everyone who refuses to accept murder and terror as normal. Lip service is not enough now. Strong action is needed."

The Sánchez government continues to avoid accusing Russia of 'genocide'

As has been happening recently, and unlike his extremely harsh messages against Israel, the president of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, has not said anything about this Russian attack. Instead, his Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has published a brief message describing the Russian attack in Shostka as "a new and brutal case of indiscriminate violence that Russia employs against civilian targets", but once again he has avoided accusing Russia of "genocide," as he has repeatedly done against Israel. A double standard that is increasingly untenable, especially considering that Russia is an aggressor country and Israel is an attacked country.
