Massive Russian attack on Ukraine, but Sánchez's government still refuses to call it 'genocide'

Vladimir Putin's dictatorship continues to launch massive airstrikes against the population of Ukraine, seeking to kill civilians.

Today, Russia launched an attack with nearly 500 drones and more than 40 missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that this new massive attack "lasted more than 12 hours", adding:

"The main targets of the enemy strikes were Kyiv and the region, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions. In the capital, the building of the Cardiology Institute was damaged. As of now, four people have been reported killed in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl. My condolences to all the families and loved ones. Across Ukraine, at least 40 people are known to have been injured, including children.

A bread-production facility, a tire manufacturing plant, private homes and apartment buildings, and other civilian infrastructure were damaged by the strikes. All necessary services are deployed on the ground."

Zelensky also denounced: "This vile attack came virtually as the close of UN General Assembly week, and this is exactly how Russia declares its true position. Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing, and it deserves the toughest pressure from the world. The Kremlin benefits from continuing this war and terror as long as it earns revenue from energy and operates a shadow fleet."

It should be noted that these Russian attacks do not cause more victims only because of the action of Ukrainian air defenses, which manage to shoot down many of the drones and missiles launched by Russia against its civilian population. Western aid is essential to prevent Russia from massacring Ukrainian civilians, and also to prevent Vladimir Putin's dictatorship from receiving millions in revenue from the sale of gas and oil, revenues that serve to finance its aggression against Ukraine.

This latest Russian attack, which is so far the latest in a long and bloody series of attacks against the Ukrainian population, has only received a condemnation from José Manuel Albares, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, without Sánchez even publishing a brief tweet about it. Once again, as has been happening for months, the word "genocide" does not appear anywhere in the Spanish government's messages about Russia, unlike its messages against Israel, a country under attack, unlike Russia, which is an invading nation. The reason for this double standard is clear: Sánchez is trying to mobilize votes from the radical left, which includes many openly pro-Russian communists.

In fact, two of the most pro-Russian parties in Spain, Podemos and Izquierda Unida (now Sumar), are partners in Sánchez's government. Among the separatist partners in his cabinet are also parties sympathetic to the dictatorship that has been attacking Ukraine for three years. In fact, Sánchez's government has been dedicated to erasing all traces of Russian interference in Spain during the 2017 separatist coup in Catalonia, preventing its judicial investigation with the amnesty granted to its separatist partners. In addition, on the economic front, as I have been reporting on these pages, the Sánchez government has continued to buy large quantities of gas and oil from Russia, turning to Morocco in the latter case.

Let us recall that the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, in its Article 6, qualifies as "genocide" "any of the following acts, committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such", which acts include the killing of members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, intentionally inflicting on the group conditions of existence likely to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part, and the forcible transfer of children of the group to another group.

Russia has been doing this in Ukraine since 2022, but the Sánchez government doesn't consider it "genocide." Is the reason that Putin is not Jewish and enjoys the sympathy of many antisemites, among other things because of his alliance with Iran? If accusing Russia of "genocide" mobilized far-left voters in Spain, Sánchez would surely be doing it every day. However, he hasn't made that accusation against Russia even once.
