Viktor Orbán lies about Russian invasion of Ukraine: “It is unclear who attacked whom”

The Prime Minister of Hungary has long been feigning a pacifist stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In reality, Orbán has been aligning himself with the Kremlin for years. In June 2023, he even denied Ukraine's national sovereignty. Yesterday, he went a step further during a press conference in Brussels. You can see the full video here broadcast by MTVA's M1 channel, Hungary's public television, controlled by Orbán's government. At 6:40 in the video, you can hear this statement from Orbán about the Russian invasion of Ukraine:

"Ezt hiszik majd nyugat-európai emberek. Nyugodtan reggelizznak otthon, isszák a kávéjukat és azt gondolják, hogy milyen szép dolog, milyen szép erkölcsileg milyen helyes dolog, hogy egy kis országot, amit megtámadtak -persze nem is akkora kicsi, meg nem is világos, hogy ki támadott meg kit- mindenesetre egy erőszak alá országot most mi megsegítünk, és milyen jó, hogy ez nekünk nem kerül semmibe, miközben egyébként ők fognak fizetni".

This is the English translation:

"That's what people in Western Europe will think. They'll have breakfast at home, drink their coffee, and think how wonderful, how morally right it is to help a small country that has been attacked—though it's not that small, it is unclear who attacked whom— in any case, a country that has been subjected to violence, and how good it is that it costs us nothing, while they will pay for it."

These statements have been published by Hungarian media such as Heti Világgazdaság, Népszava, Magyar Hang, 24.hu, 444.hu and Daily News Hungary, as well as several foreign media outlets.

So, almost three months shy of the fourth anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Viktor Orbán still doesn't clearly see it as an invasion, nor does he know who attacked whom. I don't think this is a problem an ophthalmologist can solve. Of course, Orbán is lying: he knows perfectly well that there is a war in Ukraine because Russia invaded that country, but since the Hungarian prime minister is a close friend of Vladimir Putin, he uses a lie to pretend he hasn't noticed anything and to favor the aggressor, which is Putin's dictatorship.

I think it's high time we spoke plainly: What Orbán is doing is not promoting the cause of peace, but rather siding with the invader to try to force Ukraine to surrender and allow Moscow to profit from its war. Putin ordered this invasion because he wants to rebuild the USSR, a communist dictatorship that invaded neighboring countries, violating their national sovereignty, destroying their freedoms, and deporting and murdering their citizens. What kind of patriot and conservative can align themselves with a tyrant who has such aims?
