Absurd: Trump eases Russia's burden while Putin aids Iran's terrorist regime against the US

Strength with Iran and Venezuela, and weakness with Russia

Of course, I must acknowledge that Trump has had some successes, such as his actions against the dictatorships of Venezuela and Iran, two of Vladimir Putin's allies. The capture of Nicolás Maduro could end up triggering, in turn, the possible collapse of the Cuban communist dictatorship, which is in serious trouble after ceasing to receive Venezuelan oil. However, these actions by Trump are not explained by an elaborate strategy: they simply reflect an attitude of strength that contrasts with the appeasement of these dictatorships by previous US presidents.

In fact, the absence of a well-developed strategy is clearly evident in Trump's attitude toward Russia, which, along with communist China, is the main partner in that "axis of evil" that also includes dictatorships like Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea. Yesterday, the US government decided to ease sanctions on Russian oil imports, an absurd decision that has rightly angered both Ukraine and several European countries allied with the US, who consider it a favor to Vladimir Putin. Of course, Viktor Orbán, Putin's friend and Ukraine's enemy, has celebrated Trump's decision. This alone should be enough to understand the US president's mistake.

A $10 billion injection into the Russian coffers

Let us remember that Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for four years, systematically attacking the civilian population and committing countless war crimes. The President of Ukraine has calculated that Trump's decision could inject $10 billion into the Russian coffers, money that Putin will use to continue killing Ukrainian civilians. With this incomprehensible decision, which serves to relieve the aggressor power in this war, Trump is not doing peace a favor: what he is doing is helping Russia to continue its invasion. But this clumsy decision will not only help Russia.

The White House ignores warnings that Moscow is helping Tehran

This Thursday, the United Kingdom stated that Russia is supporting the Iranian dictatorship in its war with the United States and Israel. This is not the first report we have of Russian involvement in this conflict. A week ago, it was revealed that Moscow is providing Tehran with intelligence to attack US targets. Given this information, the most astonishing thing was seeing the White House's reaction of downplaying it and ultimately denying that this was the case simply because Putin had allegedly told them so in a phone conversation with Trump this Monday. "We can believe them," said Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy to Moscow, about the Russians.

Lifting sanctions on Russia for helping Iran kill U.S. soldiers

It's important to remember that the Kremlin has lied numerous times in recent years, even denying that it would invade Ukraine a week before launching it. If anything has been proven so far, it's that Putin's dictatorship always lies and has no credibility whatsoever. Until now, Witkoff has played a deplorable role in the contacts between Washington and Moscow, always favoring Putin and acting as a whitewasher for the Russian dictator in the West. Now he's doing it again, and Trump continues to listen to him, now even ordering Russia to be relieved while Putin helps the terrorist regime in Iran kill US soldiers. It's utter nonsense.

There's no strategy behind something like this: it's all improvisation.

Supposedly, Trump's decision was intended to lower oil prices at a time when they are rising due to the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, but what the White House is actually doing by giving in to Russia is benefiting one of the main allies of that terrorist regime, which is attacking oil tankers in that strait and in the waters of the Persian Gulf. With this clumsy decision, the message Trump is sending to the world is that he has no strategy, that he is simply improvising, driven by certain impulses that cannot be explained by a coherent discourse of strength against this axis of evil.

In fact, the strength that Trump has displayed against the dictatorships of Iran and Venezuela further highlights his weakness towards Moscow, a clumsy policy with which Trump has only managed so far to encourage Putin to continue killing Ukrainian civilians as a bargaining chip in negotiations in which Trump has too often yielded to Russian interests.

These measures do not promote peace, but rather the invader

It is impossible not to recall now Trump's promise in May 2023 that he would end the war in Ukraine in "24 hours". He never explained how he would do it. So far, what he has made clear is that he had no serious strategy to achieve it: that is why he concealed his plans, if he had any. What he has done, above all, is pressure the invaded country and give in to the invading country. This has never been a way to achieve peace: as history shows, all that is achieved is to favor the invader and encourage our aggression.
