Several provinces in Spain are currently suffering from a terrible wave of forest fires that has forced the evacuation of thousands of people.
The figures for these fires are catastrophic and have already prompted other countries to send aid. Right now, 59,896 people have been evacuated and 29,867 are confined to their homes due to the fires affecting the provinces of Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo. A total of 95,000 people have been affected in these three provinces and another 16,000 in Castellón. The fires have already burned an area of 81,000 hectares.
The fires have already affected 110,000 people. We're talking about a lot of people who are experiencing these moments with great concern. This catastrophe, due to its scale, is very reminiscent of what happened in the terrible floods of 2014. In times like these, those affected need companionship and support, to have people nearby who make them feel that Spain is by their side and that they will have all the necessary help until their lives return to normal. In this regard, I find the gesture of the national football team coach, Luis de la Fuente, admirable. This morning he went to the Marazuela sports center in Las Rozas to support the residents evacuated due to the fires in Colmenar del Arroyo. My applause to him.
Today, the affected residents also received a visit from the King and Queen of Spain. This morning, they went to the "La Chopera" municipal sports center in Villamanta to accompany 200 residents evacuated due to the fires. The King and Queen were accompanied by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the Third Vice President of the Government, Sara Aagesen. The residents greeted Felipe VI with shouts of "¡Viva el Rey!" (Long live the King) and many wanted to shake his hand, as can be seen in this video published by the Royal Household:
The visit has produced some images that would be unthinkable for our leaders. In them, we see the King and Queen among the people, sitting with the residents and listening to their stories. For the Head of State's security detail, something like this is always a risk, but Felipe VI assumes that risk, just as he did on his visit to Paiporta two years ago, when the King stood among residents furious at the neglect they suffered after the floods in Valencia, while Sánchez fled from them.
It should be noted that the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has also visited the areas affected by the fires, but his visit was radically different from that of the King and Queen. You can see those visits here. The first video shows Sánchez's visit to Tamajón, Guadalajara, another of the provinces affected by the fires, on July 22:
Yesterday Sánchez visited Cenicientos, in Madrid, one of the towns affected by the fires in that province:
As you can see, in both cases Sánchez visited command posts, without meeting with the residents. In both videos we can see emergency services personnel, members of the Civil Guard, and soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (UME).
We have a prime minister who is incapable of connecting with the people unless his party, the PSOE, has previously orchestrated a carefully orchestrated environment for him. For years now, but especially since his escape from Paiporta, the Prime Minister of Spain has shown a clear fear of connecting with the Spanish people, an unusual situation in a democratic country, but understandable given that the head of government has demonstrated an absolute lack of scruples when governing, systematically putting his personal interests before the general interest and exhibiting a clear desire to cling to power at all costs, after having lost parliamentary support. As a result, the government remains in power in 2026 by repeatedly extending the 2023 budget. The result is what we see in those videos, which paint a pitiful picture of the Prime Minister.
