Brussels wanted to blackmail those countries with purely ideological conditions

Hungary and Poland veto to EU budget: what many media do not explain to you

This Monday many media have published news about the more than foreseeable veto of Hungary and Poland to the budget of the European Union for 2021-2027.

Brussels made the recovery fund conditional on the "rule of law"

Yesterday, the Efe agency stated that this veto "leads to the delay of the entry into force of the new accounts and the Recovery Fund after the coronavirus pandemic", a speech that many media have reproduced without explaining even remotely the reasons there are behind that veto.

The fact is that Brussels has long threatened Hungary and Poland with conditioning that recovery fund on political issues. Those threats were confirmed in July. During this time, Brussels has been spreading a narrative according to which these funds would be linked to respect for "democratic values" and the "rule of law", but there was a catch in that.

The ideological discourse that Brussels hid under the label "rule of law"

That trap was already visible when the European Parliament approved the Sargentini Report against Hungary in July 2018 and the López Aguilar Report against Poland in July 2020. In both reports the "rule of law" is used as a Horse of Troy to impose on these countries progressive ideological dogmas such as the acceptance of abortion and gender ideology.

As an example, the Sargentini Report criticized Hungary stating that "the definition of family in the Hungarian constitution as “marriage and partner-child relationships” is outdated and based on conservative beliefs", criticizing the firm position of the Hungarian government confronted illegal immigration and complained that "patriarchal stereotyped attitudes still prevail in Hungary with respect to the position of women in society." This purely ideological language is due to the fact that the report's writer, Judith Sargentini, is a MEP for GroenLinks, successor to the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN).

The same can be said of the López Aguilar report against Poland, written by a Spanish socialist and that it is a blatant attempt to impose the ideological theses of the left on the Slavic country. By way of example, the report criticizes the legislation that has been developed in that country to protect prenatal life, demanding that Poland "refrain from any further attempts to restrict women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights", in reference to abortion, and also criticizes the Polish initiative "Stop Pedofilii" against the promotion of sexual relations with minors.

What they wanted was to subject Hungary and Poland to the dogmas of the left

In short: what the EU disguises as "democratic values" and "rule of law" is the claim that Hungary and Poland submit to the ideological dogmas of the left. It is not the first time that something like this has been attempted: let us remember that both countries were subjected to communist dictatorships imposed by the USSR, and both Hungarians and Poles staged popular revolts against the Soviet tyranny, not only because it threatened the individual freedoms of the inhabitants of both countries, but also because it violated their national independence and their right to govern themselves.

Hungary and Poland have already lived under Moscow's boot and don't want Brussels'

Last Friday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán compared this vision of the EU with the former Soviet Union and denounced that the Brussels claim was "blackmail on an ideological basis without objective criteria". The most serious thing about this blackmail from Brussels is that it has tried to promote a leftist ideological colonialism on Hungary and Poland using the pandemic as an excuse and taking advantage of the need that many countries have for these recovery funds.

It is easy to predict what the narrative of many media will be from now on: they will accuse Hungary and Poland of enlisting in an "authoritarianism" that does not care about the suffering of many Europeans. What they will not say is that two free peoples have refused to sell their national sovereignty and to become mere colonies of the progressive elite of Brussels. In fact, the looming European crisis is not caused by the Hungarian and Polish veto to EU budget. The crisis will be caused by an EU elite who believe they have the right to overwhelm the member countries as the USSR did before with its satellites. Hungary and Poland have already known what it is like to live under the communist boots of Moscow, and it is logical that they do not want to submit to the socialist boots of Brussels now.
