The terrible wave of forest fires that Portugal is suffering today keeps dozens of active outbreaks in the center and north of the country, with some roads still closed. These fires are making aerial operations against the fire difficult due to the large amount of smoke generated, according to André Fernandes, national commander of Civil Protection of Portugal.

To assist Portugal in the face of this disaster, this Tuesday at 11:22 p.m. CET the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME) announced its deployment in Portugal, with units from the First (BIEM I) and Fifth Emergency Intervention Battalions (BIEM V) from Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) and León. Here we can see the BIEM I vehicles leaving Torrejón Air Base:

This Wednesday, at 13:07 CET, the Spanish Ministry of Defense has announced that 248 soldiers and 82 vehicles of the UME are already fighting the fire in Portugal. The UME has announced that it has been deployed in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul, in the district of Viseu, in the north of Portugal.
