In 2018, he called for “European legislation that puts limits on liars”

Some politicians have the bad habit of using lies as a weapon to discredit their rivals, believing that anything goes.

He said that the Vox group was not in the resolution to recognize Edmundo González

This morning, Esteban González Pons, third vice-president of the European Parliament and institutional deputy general secretary of the Popular Party, gave an interview to Federico Jiménez Losantos on esRadio, in which he stated the following (minute 5:24) regarding the vote held today in the European Parliament that has recognized Edmundo González as the legitimate president of Venezuela:

"We have not been able to sign a joint declaration, signed by everyone. The one that recognises Edmundo González is signed only by the Meloni group and the Popular group. We have not been able to include the Vox group and we have not been able to include the liberals and socialists, but we trust that there will be leaks of votes between the liberals and the socialists that will allow us to gather a sufficient majority for this motion to be approved."

The official document that proves that González Pons lied

This morning, after learning of González Pons' statement, Vox MEP Hermann Tertsch posted a brief message on Twitter: "Esteban González Pons is a despicable liar." This message was accompanied by the following photo (click on the image to see it enlarged):

This document is the draft of the resolution approved today. In the document, which refutes the claim made by González Pons on esRadio, Hermann Tertsch appears as the rapporteur of that resolution on behalf of PfE (Patriots for Europe), the parliamentary group to which Vox belongs. On the voting results page (see PDF), it has been supported by 66 PfE MEPs (among them the 6 Vox MEPs) and only 5 Socialists. The rest of the Socialists voted against Edmundo González together with the far left. Let us remember, in case anyone is unaware of this fact, that the Popular Party and the Socialists are allies in the European Parliament.

In case anyone thinks that Hermann Tertsch has made up this document, I looked it up on the European Parliament website: it can be read here in Spanish and here in English. In both cases, Hermann Tertsch is listed as the rapporteur of the resolution on behalf of PfE.

In 2018, González Pons called for “European legislation that puts limits on liars”

Thus, this official document proves that González Pons lied in that interview. This fact is very serious in a politician, but in the case of the PP MEP it is even paradoxical: in 2018, González Pons asked the EU to legislate to "put limits on the proliferation of lies on the internet", stating the following during a debate in the European Parliament: "lying is as dangerous for freedom as national-populism, and is normally its instrument." During his speech, González Pons called for "European legislation that puts limits on liars."

The logical question that comes to mind is: if González Pons is capable of lying in a matter that is so easy to prove, what confidence can his word inspire in us in matters that are more difficult to prove? If this MEP from the Popular Party had a minimum of coherence, he should resign today and leave politics. Liars, those who deceive citizens by saying things that they know are not true, do not deserve to be in institutions receiving a public salary.
