Trampling on the right to the presumption of innocence has consequences that can backfire on those who attack that right.
Today, communist MP Íñigo Errejón, spokesman for the far-left coalition Sumar (Pedro Sánchez's government partner) in Congress, has announced his resignation and retirement from politics. He has done so by issuing a statement in which he alleges the following for making this decision: "The pace and way of life on the political front line for a decade has worn down my physical health, my mental health, and my emotional and affective structure."
However, messages on social networks have come to light denouncing Errejón's alleged behaviour with some women. These are unconfirmed rumours that Sumar has launched an investigation into. It must be said that there is no record of any complaint against the communist deputy for this alleged behaviour with several women. Only messages on social networks.
I have been very clear for years that a mere complaint does not constitute any evidence, and a rumour or a message on a social network even less so. I do not give any credibility to a complaint without evidence, and even less to rumours that are spread over the Internet, rumours that can cause a lot of damage even if they are false.
For years we have been suffering from a wave of feminist McCarthyism that attacks the right to the presumption of innocence of every man, assuming that any accusation by a woman is presumed to be true and should automatically serve to convict the accused. This way of persecuting a person should disgust any democrat, but unfortunately this phenomenon has spread greatly due to the support of the extreme left, including Errejón himself.
In 2017, the then communist leader of Podemos posted a message with the hashtag #YoSíTeCreo (I do believe you), demanding "legislation that is up to par, that protects victims of sexual violence instead of questioning them." It was the beginning of that wave of feminist McCarthyism against the presumption of innocence. In 2021, using the same hashtag, Errejón showed his support for Rocío Carrasco, a television presenter, stating the following:
"Rocío Carrasco denounced gender-based violence yesterday. A testimony of abuse that many will question. Just like they did with Ana Orantes. Just like they have done with so many women. That is why feminism is so necessary."
It should be remembered that Rocío Carrasco's complaint for alleged psychological abuse against Antonio Flores was dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2023, because the complainant did not provide evidence to support her story. Thus, the feminism that Errejón has been defending consists of condemning a person without evidence, simply because the complainant is a woman and the accused is a man.
The problem with supporting this violation of the presumption of innocence is that it can have a boomerang effect. That is what seems to be happening in the case of this communist deputy. Therefore, as you can understand, the case of Errejón does not make me feel sorry at all: he is getting a taste of his own medicine. What makes me feel sorry are the innocent men whom he has helped to criminalize with his support for this feminist McCarthyism.
