Some say that the Cold War schemes are no longer valid, but there are political parties that continue to act as they did then.
The clearest example is found in the communist parties, both those that continue to openly use this name and those that have adopted other brands to disguise themselves. One of these parties is Podemos, an ally of Pedro Sánchez's government.
This Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution (see PDF) condemning the provocations of the People's Republic of China (a communist dictatorship) against the Republic of China (a democratic country also known as Taiwan). The text notes that "Taiwan is a key EU partner and a like-minded democratic friend in the Indo-Pacific region; commends Taiwan and the Taiwanese people for their strong democracy and vibrant civil society, demonstrated once more by the peaceful and wellorganised elections of 13 January 2024."
Furthermore, the approved text expresses its opposition to "the PRC’s constant distortion of UN Resolution 2758 and its efforts to block Taiwan’s participation in multilateral organisations; calls for the EU and its Member States to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in relevant international organisations such as the WHO, the ICAO, Interpol and the UNFCCC."
On the other hand, the resolution "strongly" condemns the "unwarranted military exercises" of communist China on 14 October 2024, "its continued military build-up, which is changing the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, and reiterates its firm rejection of any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait; lauds the restraint and disciplined reaction of the Taiwanese authorities and calls for regular exchanges between the EU and its Taiwanese counterparts on relevant security issues."
This resolution was adopted by 432 votes in favour, 60 against and 71 abstentions. For detailed MEPs' votes, the results of this vote can be found here (pages 28 and 29). This is how Spanish MEPs voted:
What happened today is a favor from the Spanish extreme left to communist China in its harassment of free China. It is curious to see that the attitude of these ultra-left parties is practically the same as with Russia. Specifically, Podemos has been showing its clear harmony with Russian interests against Ukraine and now it is doing the same with Beijing against Taiwan. It is acting like the most radical and fanatical part of the Spanish extreme left.
