As we have seen thanks to our friends at Aventuras Entresierras, Andalusia has some spectacular mountain routes.
In his latest video, published this Saturday, Aventuras Entresierras (if you haven't subscribed to this YouTube channel yet, I recommend you do so) takes an all-terrain tour, specifically in two nice Jeeps, through the mountainous area of the Los Filabres and Baza mountain ranges, between the provinces of Almería and Granada.
In this case, it is a winter route, with temperatures of zero degrees Celsius at 7:00 a.m. The route begins in the ghost town of Portocarrero. From there, and through a rather steep mountain road that tested the endurance of the vehicles, the adventurers reach the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, which Aventuras Entresierras already showed in another video published in April 2024.
In this first part of the video, which covers the Sierra de los Filabres, we also see the mountain refuge of Calaer Alto. From there, the protagonists of the video reach the uninhabited village of El Moro, already in the Sierra de Baza, also visiting its cemetery. From there they move on to two other abandoned villages: El Tesorero and Los Mellizos. In the latter they also visit its cemetery, a visit that Manolo has been kind enough to dedicate to me (probably because of the fame that we Galicians have for things belonging to the deceased, hehe).
After this last visit, the travellers arrive at the El Pinarillo refuge, also in Baza (Granada), where they spend the night. The next day they visit the Minas de la Cruz, now abandoned but now a museum, and the Puerto de las Palomas mountain refuge, located near the aforementioned mines. A very complete adventure for lovers of off-road excursions (the video is in Spanish, you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
You can see here some screenshots from this video, which is full of spectacular landscapes and interesting places. We start with the ghost town of Portocarrero, in the municipality of Gérgal (Almería), historically linked to iron mining and abandoned since the 1970s. In the video you can see the interior of some of its houses and also some excellent aerial shots recorded with a drone.
One of the Jeeps on the hardest part of the route, between the ghost town of Portocarrero and the Calar Alto Observatory. If you have a Toyota Prius, it's best not to try to take this road.
One of the telescopes of the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, founded in 1973 and located at an altitude of 2,168 metres. It is managed by the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), which is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
The ghost village of Los Mellizos, located at an altitude of about 1,700 metres, has been documented since the 18th century. The last burial in its cemetery took place in 1963.
