The left once again displays its intolerance towards freedom of expression

The two pitiful messages the left is sending with its abandonment of Twitter

In the last few hours, coinciding with the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president, something curious is happening on Twitter.

The Western left is fleeing Twitter, but not the Chinese communist dictatorship's web
The left that wants to jump over the wall to East Berlin and sail on a raft to Cuba

They are more comfortable on a social network of a communist dictatorship

Several left-wing and far-left politicians, parties, media outlets and organisations are announcing that they are leaving Twitter, in some cases making cynical pro-democracy pleas, such as Yolanda Díaz, second vice-president of Pedro Sánchez's government and a member of the Spanish Communist Party, one of the parties that support Nicolás Maduro's dictatorship. In fact, while she says she is leaving Twitter invoking democracy as a pretext, Yolanda Díaz keeps her account active on TikTok, a network controlled by the communist dictatorship of China. The same is true for other leftist users who are abandoning Twitter.

Their idea of debate is to censure those who contradict them.

The reality is that the left was very comfortable on Twitter when it censored conservatives for the most arbitrary reasons, as often happened before Elon Musk bought that company. In fact, in Spain a far-left group boasted of managing to close the accounts of political rivals, taking advantage of a vulnerability in Twitter that "coincidentally" was only fixed after Musk's arrival. Something similar happened in other countries.

By abandoning Twitter, the left is sending two very painful messages. The first is that their idea of public debate consists of singling out, demonizing and ultimately censoring those who disagree with leftist dogmas, an intolerance of dissent that is consistent with the support that much of the left has given to all kinds of ideologically similar dictatorships.

Until now, they have disguised this intolerance by accusing their rivals of "hatred" and "misinformation", accusations that have been very successful in their propaganda media, but which have ended up falling under their own weight when the left has ended up pointing out anyone who does not think like them on any issue, in a clear attempt to liquidate freedom of expression and ideological freedom (the so-called "cancel culture"), an anti-democratic attitude that increasingly generates rejection in society, even among people on the left.

A left that is made to look ridiculous in any uncensored debate

Secondly, the left has shown itself to be incapable of engaging in a debate with serious arguments. It has been exercising a clear hegemony in public life for so many years and cancelling dissidents that right now many leftists are made to look ridiculous in any debate because for them everything is settled by calling anyone who contradicts them a "fascist". That is why they need censorship to prevent anyone from formulating arguments that question their ideological dogmas: without censorship, a large part of the left is seen as politically illiterate or, even worse, as pathological liars.

The latter has been made evident on Twitter with a tool that Facebook will now also implement. The so-called "community notes" are serving to uncover lies and manipulations on Twitter with much more efficiency, objectivity and impartiality than the so-called "verifiers", who the left applauded because almost all of them were of their ideological persuasion. Left-wing politicians, parties and media have often been made to look ridiculous with these community notes, and that is also one of the reasons why they flee from Twitter: they claimed to fight against hoaxes and misinformation, but they have proven to be fond of them.

In short, many of us will not miss those who believe that public debate should consist of them being able to say what they want and the rest of us having to keep quiet. They should close the door on their way out.
