One of the most deceitful speeches we're seeing is the one that refers to an invasion without saying a word about the invader.
That is precisely what the Patriots for Europe group did today through its Twitter account, publishing this statement from its vice-president, the Hungarian Kinga Gál (from the Fidesz party, chaired by Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary):
🗣️ | @kingagalMEP: “The EU strategy on the war in #Ukraine has failed, Brussels institutions still keep pushing a war rhetoric by sending even more arms and money to Ukraine.” pic.twitter.com/cNFEvy2kcR
— Patriots for Europe (@PatriotsEP) May 8, 2025
This is the transcript of this statement:
The nearly 50 plenary debates in the European Parliament on the war in Ukraine have clearly not led us any closer to stopping the bloodshed and the destruction. There is no doubt that the EU strategy has failed. Still, Brussels institutions continue to push the war retoric and want to send even more money and arms to Ukraine. This will not bring the end of the war any closer. Human suffering and destruction must end. It is clear that this war has no solution on the battlefield. The only way forward is through diplomatic means. It is time ti change course. We, Patriots, stand for peace.
A message identical to that of extreme left parties
This statement is regrettable both for its content and for the date chosen for its publication: May 8, the anniversary of the defeat of Nazism. If the message that Patriots for Europe had been disseminated in 1942, three years after the invasion of Poland, would Patriots for Europe have said that the Allied strategy had failed and that it was necessary to try diplomatic means with Hitler?
Significantly, in her message, Kinga Gál does not mention Russia even once. Let us remember that this war began with an unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. In her regrettable message, Gál does not make a single criticism of the invading country and focuses all her criticism on the European Union for helping the invaded country, accusing the EU of promoting "war rhetoric" simply for wanting to support a country defending itself from an invasion. It's a truly disgusting level of manipulation, but it's not new. It's a message that's identical to what extreme left parties have been sending.
To heed that statement would be to do the invaders a favor.
If the EU were to heed this message by ceasing all aid to Ukraine, the beneficiary would be Russia, the aggressor country, which is receiving support from other countries (Communist China, Iran, North Korea, and Belarus) in this war. Support to which Gál also makes no mention. Apparently, the idea is that Europe should stop supporting the invaded country, while the invading country continues to receive support from four dictatorships in its war of aggression against Ukraine.
It is precisely the diplomatic route that has failed in Ukraine
On the other hand, what has failed is precisely the diplomatic path with Russia. Western countries have done everything for years to appease Vladimir Putin's dictatorship, and it hasn't worked. The Trump administration's recent efforts to reach an agreement have also failed because of Russia's position, which insists on turning Ukraine into a satellite country of Moscow, disarmed, defenseless, and partially occupied by Russia. What diplomatic solution does Gál propose in this situation? Giving in to Russia's leonine demands?
Hungary does not send military aid to Ukraine but buys gas from Russia
Finally, it should be remembered that Hungary, governed by Gal's party, is one of the European countries that buys the most gas from Russia (4.5 billion cubic meters in 2024, with a forecast of 6.7 billion for 2025). The difference between this country and other European countries is that Hungary has not wanted to send any military aid to Ukraine, not even a bulletproof vest. In November last year, Kinga Gal stated:
We condemn Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, we sympathise with the Ukrainian people. The EU as a whole including Hungary, is doing its utmost to help Ukraine.
One might wonder what kind of solidarity with the Ukrainian people is there in calling for an end to EU economic and military aid to Ukraine when the country is defending itself against a Russian invasion, given that suspending such aid would allow the Russians to kill more Ukrainian civilians. On the other hand, and regarding what Gál said in that second sentence, it is a lie that Hungary is doing "everything possible to help Ukraine", taking into account, I repeat, that the Hungarian government has not only refused to send military aid, but also vetoed the passage of that aid through its territory.
Already in June 2023, Orbán said: "Ukraine is no longer a sovereign state", adding that "it has no no money or weapons. He can continue fighting only thanks to the assistance he is given." Two years later, Ukraine continues to resist thanks to the foreign aid that Orbán and his party oppose, while Hungary continues to buy Russian gas, even more than it needs. Is that doing everything possible to help Ukraine?
