The cynicism of the PSOE in accusing Meta of 'espionage' while supporting 'Chat Control'

This explains announcements like the one made today by the Spanish Socialists: The PSOE has requested the appearance in Congress of Mark Zuckerberg and Javier Oliván, owner and chief operating officer of Meta (Facebook's parent company), accusing their company of "the possible violation of the privacy of millions of users" due to the alleged existence of tracking user activity for advertising purposes, tracking that would have infringed European regulations.

The PSOE speaks of "silent espionage," and in doing so displays great cynicism. Recently, the European Union debated the initiative known as "Chat Control", which aims to subject the private messages of millions of users to mass surveillance on messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Signal, Threema, and Telegram, under the pretext of curbing the dissemination of child sexual abuse material. This initiative has been harshly criticized for being a threat to the right to privacy that would open the door to potential government spying on its citizens, without any judicial oversight.

Two years ago it was revealed that the government of Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) has been the most radical in its support for "Chat Control", openly requesting access to private conversations under the pretext of combating this type of crime. This purpose is especially suspicious considering that Sánchez's government has supported an attorney general convicted of revealing secrets in a socialist operation against a political rival. Imagine what such a government could do if it had access to our private conversations on messaging networks like the ones mentioned.

The PSOE's harsh attack against Meta could be due to the fact that this company owns WhatsApp, and obviously technology companies are not willing to allow the privacy rights of their users to be violated by allowing governments access to their private messages. To this we must add that Zuckerberg announced in January that Facebook would end its fact-checker program, with which that social network was exercising clear censorship against conservatives. A censorship supported, of course, by the left, which has been threatening the right to freedom of expression under the pretext of fighting against "hate speech," an expression with which it disqualifies any disagreement with progressive ideological dogmas.
