'Silent Night', a short film inspired by true events about Christmas on a destroyer

For many years, the Ministry of Defense and Aviation has remembered every Christmas those military personnel who are far from their homes serving their country.

Service in the Armed Forces is something that deserves recognition every day of the year, but especially at this time of year when families gather to celebrate Christmas together. The United Kingdom understands this as well. On December 3rd, the Royal Navy released an excellent video entitled "Silent Night: On the Frontline". The short film features the English version of the world-famous Austrian carol "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht," written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr, alongside images of a battle station drill on a Type 45 destroyer, interspersed with footage of one of its crew members' families at home on Christmas Day:

The Royal Navy explains this video as follows: "Christmas is a time associated with being with family and friends, but every year our people miss nativity plays, decorating the tree, or even speaking with loved ones. Inspired by true events, Silent Night: On the Frontline follows a Royal Navy Type 45 Air Defence Destroyer on active operations on Christmas Eve. This film depicts the real threat of a drone attack, where the ship’s company’s imminent action shoots down the target with their Sea Viper Ballistic Missile system. Sometimes, you sacrifice the moments that matter the most—so others can hold on to theirs."

This video is an excellent reminder that we live in peace thanks to the men and women who watch over our security, making many sacrifices and spending a great deal of time away from home for a greater good: the defense of their nation. In free countries, we can never be grateful enough to these people, of whom we can truly say that they are the guarantors of our peace and our freedom.

The Royal Navy has six Type 45 destroyers, also known as the Daring class: HMS Daring (D32, in service since 2009), HMS Dauntless (D33, 2010), HMS Diamond (D34, 2011), HMS Dragon (D35, 2012), HMS Defender (D36, 2013), and HMS Duncan (D37, 2013). These ships have a displacement of 7,500 tons, a length of 152.4 meters, a beam of 21.2 meters, and a draft of 7.4 meters.

Type 45 destroyers are specialized in air defense and heavily armed. Their primary defense is the Sea Viper missile system, capable of launching up to 48 MBDA Aster surface-to-air missiles from six launchers with eight cells each. Their main gun is a 4.5-inch (114 mm) BAE Systems Mk.8 mod 1.

In addition, these ships have two 30mm Oerlikon cannons, two M134 Minigun rotary machine guns, two 20mm Phalanx close-in weapon systems (CIWS), and six light machine guns. At the stern, they have a flight deck and hangars capable of accommodating and operating two Westland Lynx helicopters or one AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin HM1 helicopter, both models with anti-ship and anti-submarine capabilities.
