The Airbus A400M Atlas, one of the world's most outstanding military transport aircraft, is celebrating this Monday.

Airbus Defence posted this message today on its Twitter account: "15 years ago, we began a journey that would redefine military transport. Today, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the A400M serial production!" The European company added: "From delivering humanitarian aid to operating in the most remote environments, the A400M has become the backbone of air forces worldwide."

Airbus Defence has indicated that the A400M fleet in service has now logged 250,000 flight hours. The first flight of the first flight prototype, MSN001, took place on December 11, 2009. Seven prototypes were completed, the first two for ground testing and the remaining two for flight testing, of which two are still in service. The first production aircraft, MSN007, was delivered to the French Air Force on August 1, 2013, receiving the military registration F-RBAA and the name "Ville de Orléans".

Airbus Defence reports that a total of 137 A400Ms have been delivered to 10 nations. The current operators of this aircraft are as follows:

  • Belgium: 7 units purchased and delivered.
  • France: 50 units purchased, in the process of being delivered.
  • Germany: 53 units purchased, in the process of being delivered.
  • Indonesia: 2 units purchased, in the process of being delivered.
  • Kazakhstan: 2 units purchased, in the process of being delivered.
  • Luxembourg: 1 unit purchased and delivered. It is their only fixed-wing military aircraft.
  • Malaysia: 4 units acquired and delivered.
  • Spain: 27 units purchased, in the process of being delivered.
  • Turkey: 10 units acquired and delivered.
  • United Kingdom: 22 units acquired and delivered.

The A400M's primary mission is transport. It can carry up to 37 tons of cargo in a compartment measuring 17.71 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 3.85 meters high. It can airdrop cargo in operational areas using pallets equipped with parachutes. In its troop transport configuration, it can carry up to 116 fully equipped soldiers. In its medical evacuation configuration, it can transport up to 66 stretchers and 25 medical personnel. Furthermore, 8x8 armored vehicles such as the VCR Dragón.

Another important role of this aircraft is aerial refueling. The A400M versions that operate as tankers are equipped with two Cobham 908E aerial refueling nacelles located on the undersides of the wingtips. The aircraft can carry up to 50 tons of internal fuel and refuel two aircraft or helicopters simultaneously using a probe-and-drogue system.

Airbus Defence today outlined future alternative missions for the A400M: "Firefighting, connectivity, and mothership concept." In 2023, we already saw the A400M testing as a firefighter here, dropping water and retardant from a tank located in its cargo area, an accessory called the Airbus A400M Firefighter Demo Kit Mk2.

Airbus already indicated in 2025 that the A400M could also operate as an airborne communications center, distributing information to other air and ground systems, currently through narrowband communications, although broadband communications via a satellite connection are expected to be introduced in the near future. Regarding the mothership concept, in 2021 we already saw here the Remote Carriers project which aims to convert the A400M into a drone carrier aircraft, launching DT-25 unmanned aircraft within the framework of the sixth-generation FCAS fighter program.

Last year we saw yet another alternative mission: electronic warfare. The A400M could become a platform for the active interference of enemy systems. This role could be of great interest to Spain, as the Air Force lost this capability years ago with the retirement of the Falcon 20 TM.11 "Brujo" and the Boeing 707 TM.17-4 "Reina del Espectro" from the 47th Mixed Air Force Group. Significantly, Airbus Defence has not mentioned this capability among its next-generation missions for the A400M.
