In recent years, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has become a familiar face in all kinds of political causes.
Thunberg accused Israel of 'genocide' after the Hamas attack
Her activism initially focused on climate alarmism, but she soon began to support causes that aligned with the usual positions of the far-left. Recently, we have seen her campaigning against the State of Israel following the brutal Hamas terrorist attack of October 7, 2023, and the Israeli military response to free the hundreds of hostages held by that criminal Islamist organization supported by Iran. Without having condemned that attack, on October 20, 2023 Thunberg expressed her "solidarity with Palestine and Gaza" and a few weeks later accused Israel of "genocide".
Not a word from Thunberg about Iran after more than 36,500 deaths
Things change when we talk about Iran. In the almost seven years she's been on Twitter, Thunberg hasn't mentioned Iran even once. Let's remember that it's an Islamist dictatorship that hangs homosexuals, persecutes Christians, and radically discriminates against women. Large crowds have been demonstrating in Iran since December to demand freedom, and against these protests the dictatorship has perpetrated a brutal repression, murdering more than 36,500 people, according to figures released last Sunday. But Thunberg remains silent.
Thunberg refuses to comment on Iran
Yesterday, the London-based Persian media outlet Iran International reported that it "attempted to contact Greta Thunberg by phone and email to clarify her position on the Iranian national revolution, but she refused to give interviews or comment on the Iranian protests; a silence that, for many, is more revealing than any explicit response."
Iran International adds: "In recent years, Greta Thunberg has become a symbol of a new generation of global activists; a figure who takes outspoken positions not only on the climate crisis, but also on political and humanitarian issues. Over the past year, she has repeatedly appeared at demonstrations wearing a headscarf and carrying a Palestinian flag, issued strong messages against Israel, and attempted to present herself as the "voice of the victims of Gaza." This strong presence made her a "paradigm of moral courage and human commitment" for many, but this very image has been seriously challenged today."
The flags of the Iranian dictatorship used by the Swedish far left
The Persian media outlet reports that "Greta Thunberg has chosen to remain silent; a complete silence, without even a message of sympathy or a brief gesture. This silence is not a minor detail, but a direct contradiction of her previous statements about defending human life. Critics argue that the issue is no longer one of "forgetfulness" or "ignorance." Greta Thunberg has demonstrated that she can react to global events with the utmost speed when she chooses. So the main question is: Why not Iran? Why are so many activists who demand global justice suddenly silent when unarmed protesters are killed in the streets?"
Iran International points out something significant about the far-left mobilizations in Thunberg's home country: "This silence comes in a context that has become highly political. On Monday, January 26, in Sweden, some pro-Palestinian groups that have been continuously marching through the country's streets for the past two years incorporated the flag of the Islamic Republic into their demonstrations, an action that provoked an attack on a march of Iranian freedom fighters in an area of Gothenburg. For many Iranians, this incident was a clear symbol of the dangerous connection between some of the so-called 'anti-war' movements and one of the most authoritarian governments in the Middle East."
Iran International denounces Thunberg's “selective activism”
The Persian media outlet concludes: "In such a space, Greta Thunberg's silence is no longer perceived as mere inaction, but as part of a broader pattern: selective activism. A pattern in which some victims receive empathy and media coverage, while others are ignored for political and ideological reasons. This approach not only calls into question the moral authority of figures like Greta Thunberg, but also undermines the very concept of universal human rights. If the defense of human life depends on geography, political coalitions, or popular narratives, then there can be no talk of "justice"; what remains is politics disguised as morality."
The similar case of the Spanish far-left
That same double standard of the far left has also been exposed in Spain. A few days ago, as we already saw here, the communist partners in Pedro Sánchez's government rejected a text supporting the protests in Iran and condemning the brutal repression of the Islamist dictatorship against the demonstrators. The communists sought to remove all references to the "courage of Iranian women" and the imposition of the Islamic veil, completely distorting a proposed institutional declaration in the Congress of Deputies. It is the same extreme left that has been very active in its campaign against Israel after refusing to condemn the Hamas terrorist attack.
