The Spanish National Police's new Ineos Grenadier vehicles: a logical purchase?

The Spanish National Police continues to expand its fleet of vehicles, now with the purchase vehicles from a British firm.

The National Police have announced today the purchase of 10 new all-terrain vehicles, stating that they will be used by the UIP (Police Intervention Units, also known as riot police)"to reinforce their response capabilities in any situation."

The official statement doesn't indicate it, but these vehicles are Ineos Grenadiers, manufactured in the United Kingdom. It's a model inspired by the famous Land Rover Defender, a robust off-roader that has been used worldwide. Unlike the classic British off-roader, the Grenadier has a BMW engine, boasts 249 hp, and costs over €75,000. It's considered a luxury off-roader.

On social media, some people have criticized this purchase, pointing out that vehicles of this type would be more needed by the Civil Guard, which often carries out its missions in rural areas, while the National Police patrol in cities.

Personally, I'm surprised by the number of vehicles acquired. Ten Grenadiers is very few. The National Police has eleven Police Intervention Units (located in the most populated cities), so the number doesn't add up. It's likely the vehicles are for officers. The National Police only showed three of these vehicles in the photos released today.

However, Diario Motor published more images of these vehicles, showing some painted black and without any markings. On Twitter, @sergio_emergencias posted this photo of one of those black Grenadiers on March 3:

The occupants of this vehicle are uniformed National Police officers. Therefore, it can be deduced that these vehicles could be used by some units for undercover missions... Although, frankly, using luxury SUVs on those kinds of missions won't exactly make them blend in. Sergio points out that these black vehicles are possibly destined for the GOIT (Technical Intervention Operations Group), an elite unit of the National Police specializing in particularly complex missions, such as those related to terrorism and other forms of organized crime.

On March 6, the Civil Guard union Jucil showed this scene of a Civil Guard Ford Kuga SUV stuck on the side of a rural road:

Jucil reported that these vehicles get "stuck" with a 20 cm difference in level, "skid even on basic terrain" and "in areas where 70% is forest, they will only be able to monitor 30% of the territory."
