Russia threatens 12 countries, including Spain, identifying 21 military targets

The Kremlin takes a new step in its policy of threats against allied countries, this time pointing to very specific military targets.

The Ministry of Defense of Vladimir Putin's dictatorship today published a statement claiming that "the leadership of a number of European countries took a decision to increase production and supply of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Ukraine for launching strikes on Russian territory," a rather cynical claim, considering that Russia has been carrying out massive drone attacks against the Ukrainian civilian population as part of its unprovoked invasion of that country. Some of those Russian drones have violated NATO airspace, without the Kremlin issuing even the briefest apology.

With its statement about a decision signed on March 26, the Kremlin could be referring to the declaration signed by the European UAV industry association DACH on March 26 setting the goal of achieving a production capacity of more than 100,000 units per year for drones and anti-drone defense systems by 2027. The fact is that the signed document made no reference to Ukraine, but the Kremlin lying is nothing new. It does so systematically, as it has been demonstrating for years.

The Russian Ministry of Defense also states: "We consider this decision to be a deliberate step leading to a sharp escalation of the military and political situation on the entire European continent and creeping transformation of these countries into a strategic rear for Ukraine." A further display of cynicism from a dictatorship that has been attacking a neighboring country for four years, which it seeks to dominate by invoking nationalist arguments.

Then, the Russian Ministry of Defense escalates to threats: "Instead of strengthening the security of European states, the decisions of European leaders are increasingly dragging these countries into war with Russia". Yet another cynical gesture. Let us recall that since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has already threatened Finland, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The only country that insists on maintaining an active war in Europe is Russia with its invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense concludes its statement by publishing a list of military targets that it describes as "'Ukrainian' and 'joint' companies producing UAVs and their components for Ukraine in their countries." The list includes 21 targets in twelve countries: Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, clarified the meaning of these threats in a message on Twitter:

"Russian Defense Ministry’s statement must be taken literally: the list of European facilities which make drones & other equipment is a list of potential targets for the Russian armed forces. When strikes become a reality depends on what comes next. Sleep well, European partners!"

Thus, Russia is formally threatening twelve countries, including Spain, with military action simply for sending military aid to a country suffering a war of aggression from Putin's dictatorship. The Spanish company being threatened by Russia is UAV Navigation, based in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid), which manufactures navigation and control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles. It is one of the companies collaborating on the FCAS sixth-generation fighter program, one of the most important defense programs in which Spain is currently involved. It so happens that in 2022 that company was accused of manufacturing autopilots used by Russian Zastava drones used in the invasion of Ukraine, an accusation that UAV Navigation categorically denied.

Curiously, neither the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, nor the Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, have said anything about these threats, which were issued from the official website of the Russian Ministry of Defense earlier this afternoon. Medvedev's message confirming the nature of the threats was published four hours ago. A truly astonishing silence.
