A silence that includes the entire government and its affiliated media outlets

The significant silences regarding a direct threat from Russia against Spain

What is happening in Spain in relation to Russia is becoming increasingly strange, although some attitudes are very predictable.

Russia threatens 12 countries, including Spain, identifying 21 military targets
Russia's hybrid attack against Spain and the attempts to ignore and forget what happened

This Wednesday, you could read here an article indicating that Russia has threatened 12 countries, including Spain, by identifying 21 military targets. That day, the Russian Ministry of Defense published a list of military targets which includes a Spanish company, UAV Navigation, based in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid). In case there was any remaining doubt about the meaning of this threat, on the same day the Vice Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, made it clear that it is "a list of potential targets for the Russian armed forces."

Counting Stars was the first Spanish website to report on this threat on Wednesday night. On Thursday, many Spanish media outlets ended up picking up on the story, although significantly, media outlets aligned with the government have said nothing, including RTVE, a public broadcaster controlled by the executive branch.

The threat was issued by Russia on Wednesday at noon. More than 48 hours have now passed, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has made no comment on the matter. Neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Ministry of Defense has said anything either. No member of the government has commented on this threat. They are very vocal about everything related to the United States and Israel, but when it comes to a direct threat from Russia to Spain, they remain silent.

According to The Objective, the Spanish company threatened by Russia has expressed confidence that the government will reinforce security at its facilities after being explicitly identified by Moscow as a military target. It will be interesting to see if the government takes that step without having even commented on such a serious threat, the first that Russia has launched directly against Spain through a public statement identifying a military target on Spanish territory.

As for the rest of the political class, there has been almost complete silence regarding these threats. The leaders of the major parties have said nothing about it. I have only found reactions from Cuca Gamarra, deputy secretary for Institutional Regeneration of the Popular Party (who has shown her support for the threatened company), and from Pedro Rollán (PP), President of the Senate, who commented that this company has been threatened for “being on the right side, promoting the Spain brand, being a global leader, and supplying equipment so that a country that has been invaded can exercise self-defense”.

Otherwise, there are silences that were entirely predictable. Pro-Russian propagandists in Spain, including some who swore before the Spanish flag to shed every last drop of their blood to defend it, are keeping a deathly silence about this Russian threat. The same silence as the government and its affiliated media, which is very telling. It is worth remembering that Pedro Sánchez’s main international ally is currently the communist dictatorship of China, which in turn is Russia’s main ally. With the government’s silence in the face of this threat, we are seeing the price Sánchez is willing to pay to align himself with a one-party regime like the one that has ruled mainland China since 1949 without free elections and systematically violating human rights.
