What Sánchez and the PSOE were saying years ago about pardons for political corruption

This Wednesday, the Official State Gazette (BOE) publishes five pardons granted by the government at the last meeting held by the Council of Ministers before the holidays, this Tuesday. Among the pardons, there are two that have caused a great scandal: that of Laura Borràs i Castanyer, former president of the Catalan Parliament and former president of Junts per Catalunya, who was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for crimes of malfeasance and falsification of documents (illegally split public contracts to award them to a friend); and that of Juan Fernández Gutiérrez, former socialist mayor of Linares and member of the PSOE (Sánchez's party), sentenced to three years in prison for a crime of embezzlement of public funds to collect bonuses.

The crimes pardoned by the government are two clear examples of political corruption committed by a member of the Prime Minister's party and by a leader of one of the parties that supported Sánchez's reelection in 2023 after he had lost the election. Any pardon for corruption offenses should be scandalous, but under these circumstances, it is even more so, since we are talking about two political parties directly linked to the government. In one of the cases, that of Laura Borràs, the pardon can be described as a clear case of political favors being repaid, further escalating the government's campaign to undermine democratic institutions.

Furthermore, these pardons foreshadow what will happen with the corruption scandals affecting socialism if the individuals accused in them of various corruption offenses—some of whom have received the explicit support of the government and the PSOE—are ultimately convicted. The socialists are dismantling the rule of law in Spain and guaranteeing themselves total impunity to commit crimes, thus preventing the justice system from prosecuting corruption offenses. Something like this should provoke a colossal scandal, because what we are witnessing is the action of a political mafia that nullifies the justice system to leave its crimes unpunished.

It's worth remembering what Sánchez and the PSOE said about pardoning politicians for corruption offenses before coming to power. Let's look at some examples taken from their Twitter accounts:

What we have just seen is proof of the massive deception that Sánchez and the PSOE perpetrated to seize power, only to then do precisely what they had promised to prohibit. If many socialist voters are not reacting to this deception, it is because they are already complicit in it. When a politician lies to you once, you are the victim. If you continue to vote for them after they lie to you, you become an accomplice to the deception by rewarding them with your vote.
